The One-Eyed Man Is King

Man in a tux wearing a monocle. A man of the highest social echelon, as evidenced by his choice of eyewear

Studio-Annika/iStockphoto.

Eustice Tilley, the dandyish mascot of The New Yorker, telegraphs his estimable class status with a number of chic-yet-dignified sartorial choices, a top hat and topcoat among them. But the accessory that most efficiently communicates Mr. Tilley?s caste is his monocle: a single, bespoke lens secured round his neck by a fine string and held aloft before his discerning eye. By the time Tilley graced The New Yorker?s inaugural cover in 1925, the image of the bemonocled man-about-town had already become a thing of caricature. How did the monocle become a symbol of wealth?

It was a symbol of wealth from the start. The standard monocle is essentially a small magnifying glass without a handle (though early versions generally had one). The monocle can be helpful in reading small print and before the advent of modern refractive-error testing it was thought to be capable of correcting myopia, but sporting one as a general part of one?s attire was always something of a fashionable affectation. Like the lorgnette, spyglass, and, a direct ancestor, the quizzing glass, the monocle basically originated as a faddish accessory of those with the cash and the inclination to purchase such things. It was most popular with the moneyed classes in Europe in the 1820s and ?30s, and experienced a revival in the 1890s.

Though the exact origins of the monocle are unclear, fashion historian Richard Corson sets their general appearance around the turn of the 19th century in Great Britain, with quick adoption and further development in Germany. According to a 1950 article from Optical Journal, from the beginning the single lens carried with it ?an air of conscious elegance,? making it ripe for ridicule: ?[O]ne had the feeling the wearer was being a trifle foolish, an attitude which resulted to some extent from the fact that monocles frequently did not fit and kept dropping out of place.?

Indeed, the impractical design of monocles ensured their status as a luxurious object. In order to avoid muscle strain, the frame of the monocle?which may be made of gold, silver, tortoise shell, and other materials?must be custom-fitted to the wearer?s eye, an expensive proposition. Additional support may come from a ?gallery,? a raised edge that helps keep the lens away from the wearer?s eyelashes and more firmly ensconced in the eye orbit. Due to their sensitivity to gravity, monocles are almost always attached to a chain or string.

The association of monocles with a stereotype of the rich, especially with the rich and pretentious, began at least as early as Charles Dickens? skewering of young Mr. Barnacle?s intractable eyepiece in Little Dorrit, serialized between 1855 and 1857. In America, the image was largely popularized by E.A. Sothern?s portrayal of the silly English nobleman Lord Dundreary in Our American Cousin, first performed in 1858.

Still, there?s traditionally been at least some demand for the eyepiece among the less-moneyed. Mass-produced monocles of inferior quality were available throughout the 1800s and worn by men?and occasionally women?of more modest means. Currently, a monocle in ?whisky tortoise? can be had from the eye-dresser Warby Parker for $50.

Monkey Brain Area Keeps Count of Kindnesses

monkey whispers into neighbor's ear Monkeys can be kind to their neighbors ? and they have a specific brain region which appears to record their good deeds. Image: Flickr/jinterwas

Monkeys might not be known for their generosity, but when they do seem to act selflessly, a specific area in their brains keeps track of these kindnesses.

The discovery of this neuronal tally chart may help scientists to understand the neural mechanisms underlying normal social behavior in primates and humans, and might even provide insight into disorders such as autism, in which social processing is disrupted.

Steve Chang and his colleagues from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, used electrodes to directly record neuronal activity in three areas of the brain prefrontal cortex that are known to be involved in social decision-making, while monkeys performed reward-related tasks.?

When given the option either to drink juice from a tube themselves or to give the juice away to a neighbor, the test monkeys would mostly keep the drink. But when the choice was between giving the juice to the neighbor or neither monkey receiving it, the choosing monkey would frequently opt to give the drink to the other monkey.

The researchers found that in two out of the three brain areas being recorded, neurons fired in the presence or absence of the juice reward only. By contrast, the third area ? known as the anterior cingulate gyrus ? responded only when the monkey allocated the juice to the neighbor and observed it being received. The authors suggest the neurons in the ACG respond to and record the act simultaneously. The study's results are published today in Nature Neuroscience.

?This is the first time that we have had quite such a complete picture of the neuronal activity underlying a key aspect of social cognition. It is definitely a major achievement,? says Matthew Rushworth, a neuroscientist at the University of Oxford, UK.

The anterior cingulate gyrus is known to be a region that is specialized for social decision-making in primates, and it is located in the same area of the brain as that associated with the generation of feelings of empathy in humans.

Being nice
?The great complexity of human social interactions and the huge variation in what we find rewarding compared with other primates prompts questions about whether the anterior cingulate gyrus operates similarly in the human brain,? Matthew Apps and Narender Ramnani, who work on neuroimaging and human cognition at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK, told Nature in an email.

Through the development of a specific part of the brain that experiences the reward of others, social decisions and empathy-like processes may have been favored during evolution in primates to allow altruistic behavior. ?This may have evolved originally to promote being nice to family, since they share genes, and later friends, for reciprocal benefits,? says Michael Platt, a neuroscientist from Duke University who is a co-author of the paper.

The authors suggest that the intricate balance between the signaling of neurons in these three brain regions may be crucial for normal social behavior in humans, and that disruption may contribute to various psychiatric conditions, including autistic spectrum disorders.

The New Black Friday Strategy Totally Backfired ... - Business Insider

Kim Bhasin / Business Insider

This year's holiday retail numbers are uglier than anticipated.?Growth came in at 0.7 percent ? the weakest since 2008.

The strategies that retailers used over the holidays didn't convince enough Americans to come to stores this year.?

The early Black Friday backfired on retailers,?wrote Brian Sozzi, chief equities analyst at NBG Productions in a note to clients.

"Early store openings for Black Friday only shifted the holiday consumption pool, which was the opposite of the intended effect," he wrote.

"Retailers wanted early buying to lead to splurge buys towards the end of the season.?The thought they hoped to trigger: 'man, did I REALLY get everyone enough?'?

It didn't work, and in the end, the move probably cost retailers more than a few pennies.

"Ultimately, retailers may find that all the Black Friday shifts have really achieved is the higher costs they incur from paying employees to come in for Thanksgiving,"?wrote Justin Lahart at The Wall Street Journal.

Between the fiscal cliff, Hurricane Sandy, and the tragic Newtown shootings, shoppers weren't in the mood.

"A lot of the Christmas spirit was left behind way back in Black Friday weekend," Marshal Cohen, chief research analyst at NPD Group,?told the AP. "We had one reason after another for consumers to say, 'I'm going to stick to my list and not go beyond it.'"

Even by offering steep discounts in the final moments, retailers didn't manage to get enough shoppers into stores to buy up merchandise. They resorted to "contingency promotional plans" in their panic as Christmas closed in,?wrote Lazard Capital Markets analyst Jennifer Davis in a note to clients.

"Traffic?definitely picked up over the last weekend, but we believe sales were?not quite as robust as hoped.?The extra weekend before Christmas?this year, compounded by the warm weather, amplified the post Black Friday lull," she wrote.

Idaho senator facing DUI had image as teetotaler

BOISE, Idaho (AP) ? When U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo sponsored a 2010 bill to cut taxes on small beer brewers, he said he did so for pro-business, not pro-beer reasons.

A Mormon, the Idaho Republican told The Associated Press at the time that he abstains from alcohol, and he pledged to have a root beer to celebrate if the bill passed.

Crapo's arrest early Sunday in a Washington, D.C., suburb on suspicion of drunken driving suggests a private life that departed from his public persona as a teetotaling member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. About a quarter of Idaho's population subscribes to the Mormon faith, which discourages members from using alcohol, as well as coffee, tea and tobacco.

Colleagues said Monday they were taken aback by word of Crapo's arrest. The three-term senator is accused of registering a 0.11 percent blood-alcohol level on a breath test after running a red light in Alexandria, Va., where the legal limit is 0.08.

State Sen. Brent Hill of Rexburg, who considers Crapo a friend, said his son called him with the news, and his reaction was: "You must be talking about somebody else."

Hill is the Idaho Senate's top Republican, a position Crapo held while he was a state lawmaker from 1988 to 1992. Like Crapo, Hill is a Mormon.

"Obviously, I think many of us are very disappointed," Hill told the AP. "As a citizen of the state of Idaho, we have a right to be disappointed, and as a member of his faith, I'm disappointed that a tenet of our faith didn't mean any more to him than evidently it did."

Crapo faces a court date Jan. 4.

Lindsay Nothern, a spokesman for the senator in Idaho, said Crapo would have no comment Monday. The lawmaker, who is married with five children, was spending the Christmas holiday with family, Nothern said.

In a statement Sunday, Crapo took responsibility and pledged to ensure "this circumstance is never repeated."

"I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance," said Crapo, 61. "I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me."

The state's junior U.S. senator, Republican Jim Risch, also was "very surprised" by the news, spokesman Brad Hoaglun said.

But Hoaglun said Crapo, a cancer survivor whose public image previously was squeaky clean, should be able to count on Idaho residents' forgiveness and understanding during what's clearly a difficult time.

"As a friend and colleague, I offer my support and help to him in any way I can," Risch said in a statement. "Senator Crapo has worked hard on behalf of Idahoans for many years and I have full confidence that Senator Crapo will continue his dedicated and unselfish service to the people of Idaho."

Risch is Catholic.

Idaho's two U.S. representatives, Raul Labrador and Mike Simpson, are Mormons, though Simpson has been open with constituents and media about drinking and smoking cigarettes.

Neither Republican immediately responded to a request for comment.

Idaho politicians getting arrested for drunken driving is nothing new: Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter was arrested in the early 1990s, when he was lieutenant governor; Democratic state Sen. Edgar Malepeai of Pocatello was arrested for DUI in 2009; and former state Sen. John McGee, a Caldwell Republican, was arrested on Father's Day 2011 after driving drunk and taking a car that didn't belong to him.

But none of them were Mormon.

Crapo raised the stakes by projecting an image of a diligent member of the faith and ? at least outwardly ? following church founder Joseph Smith's 1833 revelation in which he advised members that "strong spirits are not for the belly."

The U.S. Senate adjourned last week and wasn't expected to resume until Wednesday; it's unclear why Crapo had remained in Washington, D.C., ahead of the Christmas holiday.

According to the police report, he was alone in his car. It wasn't immediately clear where he'd been or where he was going when he was stopped.

Crapo was a Mormon bishop at 31 and has showed no public signs of a break from his church's teachings.

Church members must follow its guidance ? including its rules on alcohol ? to participate fully in the faith's rituals, including temple activities that are central to the religion.

Phone calls Monday to Mormon headquarters in Salt Lake City were not returned.

Crapo, first elected in 1998, is expected to take over the top Republican spot next year on the Senate Banking Committee. He also serves on the Senate's budget and finance panels and was a member of the so-called "Gang of Six" senators who worked in 2011 toward a deficit-reduction deal that was never adopted by Congress.

The 2010 bill he sponsored on cutting taxes for brewers ultimately stalled.

Puntland Forces Rescue 22 Hostages Who Had Been Held Captive For Nearly Three Years

NAIROBI, Kenya -- In a siege that lasted nearly two weeks, forces of Somalia's semiautonomous Puntland region raided a hijacked ship Sunday and safely rescued 22 hostages who had been held captive for nearly three years, authorities said.

The Puntland government said their forces captured the Panama-flagged MV Iceberg 1, which was docked near the Gara'ad coastal village in Mudung region.

"After two years and nine months in captivity, the hostages have suffered signs of physical torture and illness. The hostages are now receiving nutrition and medical care," a statement said.

Hassan Abdi, a pirate commander, who was in touch with the ship's hijackers, said eight pirates on board the vessel were able to escape as Puntland soldiers closed in.

"None of us has been harmed," Abdi said. Puntland authorities said they had laid siege to the MV Iceberg 1 on Dec. 10.

The rescued crew members include eight Yemenis, five Indians, two Pakistanis, four Ghanaians, two Sudanese and a Filipino, Puntland Ports and Anti-piracy minister Saeed Mohamed Rage told The Associated Press. The ship was hijacked March 29, 2010.

Alan Cole, the head of the U.N.'s anti-piracy program, said the MV Iceberg 1 is one of the longest held by Somali pirates.

Close to 120 seafarers are still held by Somali pirates, though that number is considerably down from the height of the piracy crisis two years ago, when more than 600 hostages were held at once.

Hijackings by Somali pirates have significantly decreased in the last couple of years, because many ships now carry armed guards and there is an international naval armada that carries out onshore raids. In 2010, pirates seized 47 vessels. So far this year, they've taken five, a decrease that could signify that the scourge is ending, though experts say it is too early to declare victory.

The overwhelming majority of hostages have been sailors on merchant ships, though European families have also been kidnapped from their yachts while traveling in the dangerous Indian Ocean coastal waters. Four Americans were killed in February 2011 when the pirates who boarded their ship apparently became trigger-happy because of nearby U.S. warships.

For the pirates, the risks of being arrested, killed or lost at sea are overshadowed by the potential for huge payouts. Ransoms for large ships in recent years have averaged close to $5 million. The largest reported ransom was $11 million for the Greek oil tanker MV Irene SL last year.

The ransoms are often air-dropped down to hijacked ships. Somalia has been mired in conflict since President Siad Barre was overthrown by warlords in 1991 who then turned on each other.
