Samsung Galaxy S II HD spotted on retailer websites

Samsung Galaxy S II LTE HD

It seems that British retailer Mobicity may have jumped the gun with the announcement of a new high-end smartphone from Samsung -- the Galaxy S II HD. The device appeared on Mobicity's site today, alongside a promotional blurb promising "a larger, higher resolution screen and more battery power."

So the Samsung Galaxy S II HD, in case you hadn't guessed, is a Samsung Galaxy S II with an HD (720p) screen. The display size and CPU speed have also been increased, to 4.65 inches and 1.5GHz respectively. We first saw the device in Korea back in September, although the Korean variant was packing an LTE radio as well the larger screen and bumped-up specs. It's worth noting that Mobicity is using old promotional photos from the Korean version on its site, rather than any new images.

Veteran mobile blog MoDaCo notes that Mobicity's Australian counterpart is also listing the phone, again with images of the Korean version and specs which include the larger HD SuperAMOLED screen and faster CPU, as well as Android 2.3 Gingerbread and an 1850 mAh battery.

As always with retailer links, this is far from confirmation of the device's arrival in the UK or Australia. But given the rate at which Samsung's launching Android smartphones these days, we certainly wouldn't be surprised to see a refreshed Galaxy S II arriving internationally, alongside Samsung's hero device for 2012.

Wikipedia to shut for 24 hours to stop anti-piracy act (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Wikipedia, the popular community-edited online encyclopedia, will black out its English-language site for 24 hours to seek support against proposed U.S. anti-piracy legislation that Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said threatens the future of the Internet.

The service will be the highest profile name to join a growing campaign starting at midnight Eastern Time on Wednesday that will see it black out its page so that visitors will only see information about the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA).

The information will urge Wikipedia readers to contact their local congressman to vote against the bills. Other smaller sites leading the campaign include Reddit.com and Cheezeburger.

"This is a quite clumsily drafted legislation which is dangerous for an open Internet," said Wales in an interview.

The decision to black out the site was decided by voting within the Wikipedia community of writers and editors who manage the free service, Wales said. The English language Wikipedia receives more than 25 million average daily visitors from around the world, according to comScore data.

The bills pit technology companies like Google Inc and Facebook against the bill's supporters, including Hollywood studios and music labels, which say the legislation is needed to protect intellectual property and jobs.

The SOPA legislation under consideration in the House of Representatives aims to crack down on online sales of pirated American movies, music or other goods by forcing Internet companies to block access to foreign sites offering material that violates U.S. copyright laws. Supporters argue the bill is unlikely to have an impact on U.S.-based websites.

U.S. advertising networks could also be required to stop online ads, and search engines would be barred from directly linking to websites found to be distributing pirated goods.

Google has repeatedly said the bill goes too far and could hurt investment. Along with other Internet companies such as Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter and eBay, it has run advertisements in major newspapers urging Washington lawmakers to rethink their approach.

White House officials raised concerns on Saturday about SOPA saying they believe it could make businesses on the Internet vulnerable to litigation and harm legal activity and free speech.

"We're happy to see opposition is building and that the White House has started to pay attention," said Wales.

News of the White House's comments prompted a prominent supporter of the bill News Corp Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch to slam the Obama administration.

"So Obama has thrown in his lot with Silicon Valley paymasters who threaten all software creators with piracy, plain thievery," he posted on his personal Twitter account Saturday. News Corp owns a vast array of media properties from Fox TV, the Wall Street Journal to Twentieth Century Fox studios.

Wales said the bill in its current form was too broad and could make it difficult for a site like Wikipedia, which he said relies on open exchange of information. He said the bill also places the burden of proof on the distributor of content in the case of any dispute over copyright ownership.

"I do think copyright holders have legitimate issues, but there are ways of approaching the issue that don't involve censorship," Wales said.

(AP) ? This U.S. basketball team might be even better than the last two that won gold medals.

"This will be the most talented of the three teams that I've had the opportunity to coach," coach Mike Krzyzewski said Monday during a conference call.

The Americans announced the 20 players who will be candidates for the London Games, adding Blake Griffin of the Clippers and LaMarcus Aldridge of Portland to the 18 holdovers from either the 2008 Olympics or 2010 world championship who have said they wish to be considered again.

The 12-man roster and alternates for the Olympics will be chosen from the new player pool in June.

Returning from the team that won gold in Beijing are: Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul and Deron Williams. Back from the reigning world champions are: Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Tyson Chandler, Eric Gordon, Rudy Gay, Kevin Love, Lamar Odom, Chauncey Billups, Russell Westbrook and Andre Iguodala.

"I like the fact that we have a roster full of guys who've been champions, either in the Olympics or world championships, and guys who are excited to play," Krzyzewski said.

USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo had planned to add Griffin to the national team roster in 2009, but he was hurt shortly after being selected with the No. 1 overall pick and those plans were scrapped. Aldridge was on the national team roster but withdrew from consideration for the 2010 worlds for personal reasons.

But both have a shot now if the Americans decide to bolster the frontcourt on a roster loaded with point guards and wing players. And it's an experienced group, with Anthony playing in 59 games for the U.S. and James 55.

"To be on that list, I'm honored again, to be able to represent my country at the highest level. I mean, it's an unbelievable class. We've got an unbelievable group coming in and I'm looking forward to it," James said.

The final roster of 12 players and six alternates is due June 18, before the NBA finals will be completed in this lockout-delayed season, so there will be no time for a tryout camp. But USA Basketball needed to submit the list of all candidates by the end of this month so they could be entered in the drug-testing program.

The Americans will have to decide how many point guards to keep from a list that includes Rose, the NBA MVP, Paul; Williams, Westbrook and Billups ? though he started at shooting guard in Istanbul, as he does now playing alongside Paul on the Clippers.

Size could be a consideration for a potential matchup against a Spain team that boasts Pau and Marc Gasol, along with Oklahoma City's Serge Ibaka, which could help the two newcomers. Colangelo said Aldridge is a versatile big man who can shoot from the perimeter, and he sounds just as excited about Griffin as the many fans of his astounding dunks.

"He's showing what kind of future he has and I have no doubt that going forward Blake will have a significant impact on USA basketball, if not now than certainly in the future," Colangelo said.

Colangelo said the Americans decided to tab 20 players, rather than the 18 that were originally expected, to protect themselves in case some players aren't available when training camp opens. The Americans will start practicing July 6, before a free agency class that could be headlined by Howard and Williams will be able to sign contracts.

But Howard said his status wouldn't be a factor.

"I talked to Jerry a couple of days ago and I told him that I'm committed to being on the team and looking forward to winning another gold medal for the U.S. So nothing else matters," Howard said.

Whichever players are picked, the Americans will again have the unmatched athleticism that allowed them to end an eight-year Olympic gold-medal drought in Beijing and a 16-year absence from the gold-medal podium in the world championship two years ago.

Colangelo assembled the original national team roster in 2005 after taking control of the USA Basketball program following the Americans' poor performance a year earlier in Athens, where they managed only a bronze medal. That group committed to representing the Americans for three years, but then all the players and the entire coaching staff signed on for a return after winning gold in 2008.

None of those players competed in 2010, but the Americans won anyway with a young team led by Durant, the MVP of the world championships. Colangelo then combined the best of both rosters for the new pool.

Jason Kidd was the only former gold medalist on the squad when Colangelo formed the program. Now there are 18 in the mix to wear red, white and blue this summer.

"Things are moving smoothly and the proof of that pudding is we are loaded in terms of our pipeline," Colangelo said.

Only Kidd, who retired from international competition following a long career, Carlos Boozer, Tayshaun Prince and Michael Redd weren't chosen from the 2008 team. Stephen Curry and Danny Granger aren't back from 2010.

Nor was Amare Stoudemire named after he was forced to pull out on the eve of U.S. practices in 2010 because his contract couldn't be insured. He wasn't aware if insurance was the reason he was bypassed this time, saying he wasn't even aware the roster was being announced.

"It's definitely not my choice. I would love to play. My loyalty is with USA Basketball, as it always has been," Stoudemire said. "Last year I couldn't play because I had pulled out, but if they want me to play, I'd be totally open to representing the USA."

Common Brain Mechanisms Underlie Supernatural Perceptions (preview)

Belief in the paranormal arises from the same brain mechanisms that shape most human thought

Image: Eric Reichbaum/Getty Images

In Brief

  1. Most of us report that we believe in supernatural powers such as clairvoyance and telepathy and in the existence of ghosts.
  2. The widespread reports of paranormal experiences very likely derive from many of the same mechanisms that help us make decisions in daily life.
  3. Research suggests that a highly active right-brain hemisphere may cause someone to be particularly susceptible to improbable beliefs.

You may have never personally caught sight of Jesus Christ?s face in a potato chip, but you have likely succumbed to an equally improbable belief at some point in your life. Many people claim that ghosts exist or that their dreams can predict the future. Some individuals even think they have seen the face of the Virgin Mary in a grilled cheese sandwich and Mother Teresa in a cinnamon bun.

Walgreen pushes to keep Express Scripts clients

(AP) ? Walgreen CEO Greg Wasson said Friday chances are probably "slim to none" that the drugstore operator will reach an agreement with pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts before their current contract ends Saturday.

Walgreen Co. announced that it is taking several steps to help patients covered by an Express Scripts pharmacy network to continue to use Walgreen locations after the agreement ends. It expects to continue working with more than 120 Express Scripts clients, which include employers and health plans.

Express Scripts Inc. pays Walgreen and other drugstore operators to fill prescriptions. The companies have said since June that they were preparing to stop business once their three-year contract ends this year. Walgreen has said it would rather give up the revenue it gets from Express Scripts, which is based in St. Louis than continue filling unprofitable prescriptions.

Walgreen, which is based in Deerfield, Ill., has said it expects about keep about 10 million of the prescriptions it fills for Express Scripts. It filled about 88 million prescriptions in fiscal 2011, so that would amount to a loss of almost 90 percent of the prescriptions.

The nation's largest drugstore chain said Friday it has a "patient transition plan" for Express Scripts members, as it tries to keep both businesses and individual customers. That includes increasing staffing at its call center and making computer system changes to help transfer multiple prescriptions at once. It also includes a discount during January on the membership fee for the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club.

Express Scripts had offered to extend contract negotiations into January, but the drugstore chain declined because patient prescriptions still would have been disrupted after the current agreement ended, Wasson said Friday.

"We had reached out with a substantial offer (earlier this month), and the purpose was frankly to just see if there was one last shot or opportunity to prevent the disruption that's going to happen in a couple days," the CEO said, adding that they didn't "get anything meaningful back."

Wasson said the pricing of different pharmacies within a pharmacy-benefits-manager network varies by only about 5 percent, so no real significant savings comes from removing Walgreen.

"I think the risk that Express Scripts has, frankly, as we work with the rest of market and form deeper relationships with the other PBMs and health plans out there is that we never come back to them," Wasson said.

Express Scripts spokesman Brian Henry said, however, the rates Walgreen charges to fill prescriptions are 20 percent higher than other pharmacies in its network, and the companies also disagreed over identifying generic drugs.

"We've been open to having them in the network at rates that are right for our clients," he said.

Walgreen said the break will hurt its sales and earnings during fiscal 2012. But it also expects to keep 97 to 99 percent of its fiscal 2011 prescription volume in the new fiscal year. The drugstore chain said more than 120 Express Scripts clients have either switched PBMs or taken other steps to maintain access to Walgreen pharmacies next year, and Wasson said he expects that total to grow.

But Henry said only two Express Scripts clients have dropped it and switched to another PBM due to the Walgreen deal ending, and four others are keeping Walgreen in their pharmacy network.

Walgreen fills one out of every five prescriptions in the U.S., and it filled about 819 million prescriptions in its last fiscal year. The company has about 7,800 stores.

Shares of Walgreen fell 24 cents to $33.19 in Friday afternoon trading and have fallen more than 26 percent since it said it would stop doing business with Express Scripts. Shares of that company climbed 47 cents to $44.81 Friday but have fallen 18 percent since June.

Knives are out over Team Canada?s goal-scoring song

EDMONTON - There?s a bit of a goal song controversy brewing at the World Junior Hockey Championship.

Some fans and even sports broadcasters are questioning why Team Canada is using the same tune to celebrate each goal ? Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis ? as the Chicago Blackhawks play at the United Center.

Twitter was aflutter with cranky comments during Team Canada?s game against Finland, where the ?do do do. do do do? song was played eight times Monday at Rexall Place.

?I seriously can?t believe that every single Canadian isn?t rising up in outrage over Chelsea Dagger right now. NOW is when you riot, Canada,? tweeted @katebits, a hockey fan from Buffalo, New York.

?Blasphemy,? wrote Chris Boden, who hosts Chicago?s pre- and post-game TV shows on Comcast SportsNet.

?So @HockeyCanada is going to use Chelsea Dagger as the theme song for goals at the WJHC. Kill me now! #canucks,? tweeted @vancan19, a hockey blogger also known as Josh Hall from Burnaby, B.C.

The boppy, bratty rock number brings up bad memories for fans and players of the Vancouver Canucks, who were bounced by the Blackhawks in the second round of the 2009 and 2010 playoffs.

A Global B.C. reporter famously asked a few Canucks to listen to the song on an iPod to gauge their responses.

?Nightmare,? said defenceman Shane O?Brien.

?Worst song in hockey. I don?t even want to listen to it anymore,? snapped Canucks defenceman Kevin Bieksa, taking off the headphones in disgust. ?I was in the press box last game in Chicago, and I heard it six times ? and I was cringing every time. So we all know about that song in this room ? and we all hate it.?

Of course, not everyone is disgusted with the choice of Chelsea Dagger as Team Canada?s goal song.

Blackhawks fans and Canucks haters seem to be tops among those rallying to the tune?s defence on Twitter.

?Thrilled listening to chelsea dagger everytime canada scores. nothing like reminding your fella canadians how much the BLACKHAWKS rule,? tweeted @ImBlairCollins from Grande Prairie.

?I like that Chelsea Dagger is being used as the goal song. Only cause it will piss off those from Vancouver,? posted @TheRatTrick, also known as hockey blogger Frank Rekas from Plantation, Fla.

The members of The Fratellis, a band from Glasgow, Scotland, are currently pursuing other projects. Chelsea Dagger was the second single from their debut album, Costello Music, released in 2006. The Blackhawks started using the song ? about ?an androgynous groupie,? according to British music magazine NME ? during the 2008-2009 NHL season.

?You?re just happy for anyone to use something that you do,? frontman Jon Fratelli once told aolnews.com about Chicago?s use of the song. ?It?s really handy that (the Blackhawks) score so much.?

Hockey Canada did not respond to interview requests to explain why the song was chosen..

Now you need one for long (demographic) waves. As in, Generation A grows up during a crash, saves strongly, creates conditions for growth. Generation B thinks their parents are foolish Scrooges, spends, increasing growth but building up debt. Generation C sees grows up during debt-fueled growth, enjoys the good times, but then has to deal with the crash. Repeat.

  2. B_Lev Says:

A number of the cycle charts show ?rising inflation? as a characteristic of an economy slowing/ entering a recession. At the same time, the charts suggest stocks and commodity prices start falling. Is this contradiction apparent?

Why are prices increasing during a recession when (presumably) velocity slows? Outside of the 70?s stagflation or Volcker ?ringing out? inflation by inducing a recession (contractionary monetary) in the early 80?s, why would we associate a recession with increasing prices? Aging Brains Match Youth in Some Mental Tasks (LiveScience.com)

Since physical abilities decline as people age, many people think the elderly are also less able to perform mental jumping jacks as they age. New research indicates this might not be true with all brain-powered tasks: In some ways the elderly are fit to compete with their younger counterparts.

Both young and old brains take longer to reach decisions in some settings, the researchers say, because they make the conscious choice to choose accuracy over speed.

"Many people think that it is just natural for older people's brains to slow down as they age, but we're finding that isn't always true," study researcher Roger Ratcliff, of Ohio State University, said in a statement. "At least in some situations, 70-year-olds may have response times similar to those of 25-year olds." [5 Reasons Aging Is Awesome]

Brain games

The researchers studied how people of different ages performed when put through a battery of cognitive tests, which included guessing the number of asterisks on a screen (fewer or more than 50) and identifying strings of letters as either words or non-words.

The new research added young kids into the mix, from elementary-school age through college age. They found the very young kids slower at decision-making tasks, with performance improving with older groups. "Younger children are not able to make as good of use of the information they are presented, so they are less accurate," Ratcliff said. "That improves as they mature."

Individuals aged 60 and older also had a slower response time for these tasks, but the researchers found that instead of just taking longer to follow the same thought process as young people, the older people took longer to make sure they responded accurately. These older people even could be trained to respond quicker in some decision-making tasks without hurting their accuracy, similarly to younger adults.

"Older people don't want to make any errors at all, and that causes them to slow down. We found that it is difficult to get them out of the habit, but they can with practice," study researcher Gail McKoon, also from Ohio State, said in a statement. "For these simple tasks, decision-making speed and accuracy is intact even up to 85 and 90 years old."

Memory in old age

Some memory tasks do decline with age, though. "If you look at aging research, you find some studies that show older people are not impaired in accuracy, but other studies that show that older people do suffer when it comes to speed," Ratcliff said.

Previous research has shown that a mental facility called "associative memory" ? remembering two connected memories together ? declines as people age. There's still hope for other types of brain tasks, though. Perhaps not all brainpower declines at the same rate in the aging brain, the researchers suggest.

"The older view was that all cognitive processes decline at the same rate as people age," Ratcliff said. "We're finding that there isn't such a uniform decline. There are some things that older people do nearly as well as young people."

The study was published in the January issue of the journal Child Development.
