After days of secrecy, US suspect in Afghan killings ID'd, a father of 2 with arrest record

After five days cloaked in military secrecy, the U.S. soldier suspected in a massacre of 16 Afghan civilians was identified Friday as a Washington father of two who underwent anger management counselling a decade ago after an arrest for assault on a girlfriend.

The soldier accused in the killings is Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, 38, his lawyer confirmed Friday. Bales is from Lake Tapps, Wash., a community set amid pine trees surrounding a reservoir about 35 miles south of Seattle.

Bales is married, the father of two young children and a veteran who was in the midst of his fourth tour in a war zone. Neighbors described him Friday as good-natured and warm, and recalled seeing him playing outside the family's modern split-level with his two young children.

But court records show Bales was arrested at a Tacoma, Wash., hotel in 2002 for investigation of assault on a woman he dated before he married his wife, his lawyer, John Henry Browne, confirmed. Bales pleaded not guilty, underwent 20 hours of anger management counselling and the case was dismissed, according to court records. A separate hit-and-run charge was dismissed in a nearby town's municipal court three years ago, according to records.

Until late Friday, when a senior U.S. official first confirmed Bales' identity, nearly all the very limited information known about Bales had come either from unnamed military officials or Browne.

Even seemingly straightforward information raised questions not easily answered ? such as a possible defence of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Bales lost part of one foot because of injuries suffered in Iraq during one of his three tours of duty there, his lawyer said. Browne also said that when the 11-year veteran heard he was being sent to Afghanistan late last year, he did not want to go. He also said that a day before the rampage through two villages, the soldier saw a comrade's leg blown off.

The same goes for the possibility alcohol played a role.

On Friday, a senior U.S. defence official said Bales was drinking in the hours before the attack on Afghan villagers, violating a U.S. military order banning alcohol in war zones. The official discussed the matter on condition of anonymity because charges have not yet been filed.

Browne said his client's family told him they were not aware of any drinking problem ? not necessarily a contradiction. Pressed on the issue in interviews with news organizations, Browne said he did not know if his client had been drinking the night of the massacre.

Bales first enlisted in November 2001, two months after the 9-11 terror attacks and served more than three years in separate Iraq tours before the latest assignment to Afghanistan. He received more than 20 awards and commendations throughout his tour, including three Army Good Conduct medals.

Photographs released by the military show Bales smiling at a fellow soldier and reading papers in Fort Irwin, Calif., during a training exercise last summer.

Neighbours said Bales was stoic and matter-of-fact about his military career.

"He always had a good attitude about being in the service," said Kassie Holland, who lives next door. "He was never really angry about about it. When I heard him talk, he said ... 'yeah, that's my job. That's what I do.' He never expressed a lot of emotion toward it."

Holland called Bales kind-hearted around the neighbourhood. "I can't believe it was him," she said. "There were no signs. It's really sad. I don't want to believe that he did it."

Reporters swarmed Bales' neighbourhood on Friday night; no one answered the door at his white split-level home, set back from the road. Bales and his wife bought the home in 2005; the $229,000 property was put on the market on Monday, public records show.

The soldier was flown Friday from Kuwait to the U.S. military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., Army officials confirmed. The Army said he was placed in a private cell at a medium/minimum security prison near the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks.

The move to the U.S. does not necessarily mean an announcement of formal criminal charges is imminent, a defence official said.

Browne has said the suspect is originally from the Midwest but now lives near Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.

The sergeant's family says they saw no signs of aggression or anger. "They were totally shocked," by accounts of the massacre, Browne said. "He's never said anything antagonistic about Muslims. He's in general very mild-mannered."

Bales, said to have received sniper training, is assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, of the 2nd Infantry Division, which is based at Lewis-McChord and has been dispatched to Iraq three times since 2003, military officials say.

The soldier was injured twice in Iraq, Browne said. A battle-related injury required surgery to remove part of one foot, the lawyer said.

But Browne and government officials differ in their portrayal of a second injury, to the soldier's head, in a vehicle accident.

A government official said this week that the accident was not related to combat. But Browne said the man suffered a concussion in an accident caused by an improvised explosive device.

Browne also said his client was "highly decorated," but did not provide any specifics.

When he returned to the Seattle area, the staff sergeant at first thought he would not be required to join his unit when it shipped out for Afghanistan, the lawyer said. His family thought he was done fighting and was counting on him staying home. Until orders came dispatching him to Afghanistan, he was training to be a military recruiter, Browne said.

"He wasn't thrilled about going on another deployment," Browne said. "He was told he wasn't going back, and then he was told he was going."

Bales arrived in Afghanistan in December. On Feb. 1 he was assigned to a base in the Panjwai District, near Kandahar, to work with a village stability force that pairs special operations troops with villagers to help provide neighbourhood security.

On Saturday, the day before the shooting spree, Browne said, the soldier saw his friend's leg blown off. Browne said his client's family provided him with that information, which has not been verified.

The other soldier's "leg was blown off, and my client was standing next to him," he said.

Browne said he did not know if his client had been suffering from PTSD, but said it could be an issue at trial if experts believe it's relevant. Experts on PTSD said witnessing the injury of a fellow soldier and the soldier's own previous injuries put him at risk.

"We've known ever since the Vietnam war that the unfortunate phenomenon of abusive violence often closely follows the injury or death of a buddy in combat," said Dr. Roger Pitman, a Harvard Medical School psychiatrist who heads the PTSD Research Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital. "The injury or death of a buddy creates a kind of a blind rage."

Prepare A Road Map For Your Offline Business | welcome to ...

If you are going to try your own home based business doing internet marketing, you should have a blueprint of your plan of action before doing anything so you will not be groping in the dark.

The road map will show the sequence of action towards implementation with no wasted motions. The ultimate objective of the plan will be to point the direction towards the right path which will make the business profitable.

There are many things you?ll need to know for your strategy for your Internet business, such as who will handle the product creation or service. Will you act as agent or trans-shipper or do the marketing yourself?

Part of your business plan will be to foster awareness of your product or services. Do you need to purchase advertising space in ezines, on websites, and through traffic exchanges or will you use free promotion opportunities like article directories, press release distribution services, and forum participation?

There will be instances when the various phases your blueprint would need to be outlined in detail. For example, if you are going to be in social media marketing, you should have a plan for making use of MySpace, and also for Squidoo and other social network sites that you intend to use.

When you have a strategy for your Internet business, you want to make sure you have firm plans in place, but be flexible about the evolution of your business. You may stumble upon information or a new tactic that needs to make its way into your plans, and if you?re too rigid, it can impair your success.

While you have a blueprint in place, you will still need to do some adjusting and fine-tuning as the situation may demand. Varying and deviating from the plan is sometimes necessary in order to take advantage of profit opportunities that will come in the way of your business.

Your promotional campaigns are intended to improve consumer awareness of your products or services in order to be competitive or even dominant in your field, and if this desired result is not achieved, then you will have to modify or change the entire concept of your advertising strategy.

While planning should not be your entire focus, it nonetheless is essential to the successful implementation of your business. The plan that you have in place will not only serve as the road map of your business, but is also an important tool in anticipating and avoiding potential drawbacks and identifying gray areas that can have a negative effect on your business.

Antidepressant Shows Promise as Cancer Treatment

Bone marrow aspirate showing acute myeloid leu...

Retinoids have already transformed one rare type of fatal leukemia into a curable disease

An antidepressant combined with a drug derived from vitamin A could be used to treat a common adult form of leukemia, according to laboratory research led by a team at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR).

A retinoid called all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), which is a vitamin A-derivative, is already used successfully to treat a rare sub-type of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) *, however this drug has not been effective for the more common types of AMLs.

Team leader Dr Arthur Zelent and colleagues at the ICR, with principal funding from leukemia & Lymphoma Research, have been working to unlock the potential of retinoids to treat other patients with AML. In a paper recenlty published in Nature Medicine, they show that the key could be an antidepressant called tranylcypromine (TCP).

?Retinoids have already transformed one rare type of fatal leukemia into a curable disease. We?ve now found a way to harness these powerful drugs to treat far more common types of leukemia,? senior author Dr Zelent, from the ICR, said. ?Until now, it?s been a mystery why the other forms of AML don?t respond to this drug. Our study revealed that there was a molecular block that could be reversed with a second drug that is already commonly used as an antidepressant. We think this is a very promising strategy, and if these findings can be replicated in patients the potential benefits are enormous.?

ATRA works by encouraging the leukemia cells to mature and die naturally. The team thinks the failure of AML to respond to this drug may be due to genes that ATRA normally targets becoming switched off. In their search for a drug that could be used to reboot the activity of ATRA, the team looked to an emerging area of research called epigenetics. Epigenetic drugs do not target genes directly but instead target whether genes are switched on or off. They discovered that inhibiting an enzyme called LSD1, using TCP, could switch these genes on again and make the cancer cells susceptible to ATRA.

Along with collaborators at the University of M?nster in Germany, the team have already started a Phase II clinical trial of the drug combination in acute myeloid leukemia patients.

Buy Foreclosures With Your IRA | Denver Real Estate Blogger

While home prices still haven?t hit bottom nationally, demand is starting to grow, especially for distressed properties on the low end of the market.

6942b retirement statement closup 200 Buy Foreclosures With Your IRA

Large scale investors, like hedge funds and other private equity firms are rushing in with cash on hand, and that gives them the upper hand in competition for these properties.

So how does an individual investor, without extra cash lying around, get in? Retirement funds.

It may sound risky, but with strong rental demand and relatively little supply of single-family homes, it could be far less risky than the stock market. That?s because your gains are largely coming from rental income, not home appreciation, which is why this works so well in today?s market.

?Here in Reno, prices are half of what they were at the top of the bubble, so, yeah, it might go down a little bit more but I don?t think it will go to zero, like some of my stocks have gone to zero,? says Terry Vander Ploeg, who invested $105,000 in a Reno foreclosure.

The catch is that you have to do it through what?s known as a self-directed IRA. Not a lot of firms do this, but some do: Guidant Financial, Sterling Trust, IRA Resources and PENSCO are a few. The firms act as custodian of your self-directed IRA, holding the property and dealing with all associated expenses.

?It?s really an account that provides greater flexibility than what a third party administered 401K, for example, would provide,? says Kelly Rodriques, CEO of PENSCO, which has doubled its assets in the past four years. ?That?s in part because real estate has become a pretty well priced or at least valued investment area, given the downturns,? according to Rodriques.

Rich Pregel had money in a 401K from a previous employer and experience in the real estate business. Late last year he decided to put his money to work in real estate. The 48 year old Cincinnati resident bought a commercial foreclosure in his home town to rent.

?I?m generating close to $80,000 on $140,000 investment after expenses, it?s pretty much a no brainer,? says Pregel, who used a self-directed IRA.

This type of IRA does carry restrictions. The property must be used purely as an investment, with all the income going directly back into the IRA. The owner may not occupy the home or even use it as a vacation property. The owner can manage the property, doing maintenance and supervising the renting, or can hire a rental management company which would be paid for out of the IRA.

It is also possible to get a mortgage through the IRA, but it has to be what?s called a non-recourse loan.

?It?s a loan that can only seek the property, the collateral, as its sole recovery, if the property goes into default, so you as an individual can?t sign up to guarantee the loan,? says Rodriques. The IRA is not just purchasing the property, but it is responsible for liabilities and payments.

All this may sound complicated, but some say it?s worth the extra time and energy. With a rising number of foreclosed properties coming to the market this spring, and banks far more willing to do short sales on troubled loans, opportunities are everywhere.

?Right now, we bought it for a good price, put some money into it to get it up to rentable specs, and now we?ll see,? says Vander Ploeg. ?We have a renter in, and we?ll see how it goes. You?ve got to have the right renters.?

Yehuda: 10 More Movie Reviews

Game Change: Game Change joins the ranks of unnecessary made-for-TV movies about contemporary political events. Today, every public move and speech by a political figure is already on YouTube, individually or in compilation. We can hope to gain from a movie like this insight or revelation about their private life, behind-the-scenes; Game Change gives us some of this, but it's hard to know how seriously to take it since it's all one person's point of view (it's based on a book about the experience, but based on the experience).

This is the story of Sarah Palin's move from obscure Alaskan governor onto the national stage, the controversy and ridicule that attended her apparent lack of preparation and knowledge, and her eventual shift toward independence. The movie paints Sarah as truly ignorant and incapable, just as the left supposed her to be, while also humanizing her as deeply hurt by the mockery she endures for it. She was apparently well-loved in her home state; it's hard to understand how a governor could be as absurdly ignorant and incapable as this movie portrays; then again, it was just as hard to understand it in real life.

Julianne Moore is very good and very Sarah-like, of course, while Ed Harris is not very McCain-like at all. The rest of the people were unknown to me, so I couldn't say if they were accurately depicted. What I can say is that investigative journalism would have served us much better than this movie, and have been just as interesting and entertaining. Don't go out of your way.

The Descendants: Yet another in a series of George Clooney set pieces (Up in the Air, Michael Clayton, The American) with a simple story and little in the way of anything important to say. These films are entertaining, well-acted, and even artful and thoughtful. But at the end of each one I thought, "That's it?" They're like TV dramas.

George plays a guy returning to his family on Hawaii to deal with his wife who was in a boat accident and is now in a coma and to settle the immanent sale of a piece of family property. There is a little surprise early on, but none by the end. The eldest daughter is a movie-cliche: our first scene with her is "Miss Rebel", drugged up, sexed up, and rebellious, but this first scene is used only as a foil for the main character; for the rest of the movie she's the dutiful tag-along daughter and her rebellion is apparently forgotten. George is in fine form, as usual. Worth watching on an airplane ride. The score will make you fall in love with Hawaiian music.

The Decoy Bride: A small, low-budget Scottish-made formulaic sitcom, cute as these local low-budget movies tend to be. Famous bride and groom escape to Scotland to try to hold a wedding away from the press, and a local pretty but down-on-her-luck girl is used as a "decoy" bride to deceive the press. She ends up spending a lot of time with the groom, arguing with him (she thinks he's stuck up, he thinks she's low brow), etc, etc. Works, but barely.

Midnight in Paris: Woody Allen cannot cast anyone but himself as a protagonist in his movies, even when it's not him. Owen Wilson plays ... Woody Allen in Paris, trying to write a book while his rich pretentious fiance, her friends, and his soon-to-be in-laws make plans and go shopping and touring. While wandering Paris late at night, he catches a midnight car that takes him back into the early twenties and into conversation with his favorite famous authors ... not the authors, actually, but people with the names of famous authors who act like the books they wrote: a Hemingway who acts like a Hemingway novel, F Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, etc. This happens every night, while serving as a muse and revelatory process for him.

It's not a grand sweeping movie like some of his major movies, and we're all tired of Woody as protagonist. It's pretty clear where his relationship with his fiance and her pretentious friends is headed. But it's still fun to watch the caricatures on the way. It's best if you know at least something of the people being caricatured.

My Week with Marilyn: The story of Marylin Monroe's shoot in England with Laurence Olivier, which was a disaster from beginning to end - apparently Marylin couldn't act worth a damn, was always late for shooting, and suffered from a severe (and justified) lack of self-confidence, and Olivier was so appalled that he blew up constantly and wouldn't shoot movies again for a long period after. The story actually focuses on one of the minor directors (the "Third") involved with the shoot, who becomes Marylin's plaything and confidant during the shooting, much to his star-struck bemusement.

Michelle Williams doesn't quite look like Marylin, but she plays what seems to be a near enough approximation. It's fun to see a little behind-the-scenes about people you kind of know about, but again, it's hard to know how much is true. It's a fine movie, in particular Kenneth Branagh as the pateince-tested Olivier.

The Vow: A romantic comedy regarding memory loss with Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum. Rachel is fetching as usual. An accident robs Rachel of her memories of her marriage and her flight from her family, returning her brain to the middle of her youth where she was still living with her family and engaged to someone else. And so she is now - again - still in love with this someone else and has no recollection of why she fled her family; her family are overjoyed about this, and the loser is her husband, who struggles between trying to help her get her memories back and having to let her go. Meanwhile, the past may just repeat itself.

This is actually based on a true story. It's well done, nice and romantic, and sweet in the right places. I think this movie continues a pattern of artist wives with hard-working sensitive husbands (c.f. The Time Traveler's Wife also starring McAdams, Ghost, etc)

Young Adult: Charlize Theron plays a formerly popular, now spoiled brat, who graduated high school some time ago and who, when she hears that a formerly popular high-school buddy has had a new baby, decides that what she needs in her life is him. So she goes back to her home town to destroy his marriage and win him over.

Having described the plot, I can't tell you if there's much more to the movie than you can get from the synopsis on IMDB. I read it because I got bored about half-way through the movie, as there was nobody to root for and not very engaging.

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Hugo Morris Lessmore: This short won an Oscar for short animation; the link is to the entire movie on YouTube. Do you remember the opening montage scenes from Up? It's a little like that, but without the woman. It's a silent film, beautifully crafted.

Inception: I resisted watching this for some time because I'm tired of movies that suddenly reveal to you that what you thought was reality was actually a dream (within a dream). Dreamscape said all there was to say about this, or perhaps Waking Life, or any horror movie ever written.

Which is why I thought the beginning of the movie was boring. To my happy surprise, there is none of that nonsense in the rest of the movie, which, assuming you can follow it, let's us know in exactly what level of dreaming we are at all times. I admit that I cheated: I read the excellent synopsis on IMDB first, and thus found it very easy to follow the story. And what a fantastic story and movie it is.

It borrows some elements from other movies: Dreamscape, assembling the team scenes from Ocean's 11, coming to term with your wife's loss from just about any movie dealing with the subject. But most of the movie, and the way it's assembled, breaks new ground. The film is tight, the acting superb, the cinematography perfect. This ranks up with the best sci-fi movies of all time.

Withnail & I: This 1987 black comedy is widely regarded as a cult classic in Britain. It's the story of starving actors waiting for some good calls to come in, disgusted with life, and disgusting in habits, who head out to a vacation home of one an uncle for a change of scenery. Of course, they can't escape themselves, their poverty, nor their flagrantly gay uncle.

It's nearly all pointless and plot-less, and filled with what the British confusingly consider to be funny scenes, such as being disgusted, being disgusting, and being pursued by a pathetic middle-aged gay and portly uncle in the middle of the night. For all that, it's wonderfully acted and contains quotable lines nearly every minute. I didn't consider it entertainment, exactly, but it was interesting. More theater than movie material.

"Grave and appalling" reports from Syria, Annan says

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Dozens of civilians in Syria's flashpoint city of Homs were killed in cold blood, the government and opposition said on Monday, disputing responsibility for what both sides called a massacre during a visit from special envoy Kofi Annan.

"There are grave and appalling reports of atrocities and abuses (in Syria)," Annan told reporters in Ankara before meeting Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan. "Killings of civilians must end now. The world must send a clear and united message that this is simply unacceptable."

The carnage in Homs followed the army's launch of an assault on Idlib city in the northwest and coincided with the first visit to Syria by U.N.-Arab League envoy Annan, who was seeking agreement on a ceasefire, humanitarian access and political dialogue.

Activists in Homs and Syrian TV showed videos of bloodied bodies, their hands tied behind their backs, lying on trash-littered streets and in blood spattered rooms. Opposition groups also uploaded videos of corpses being wrapped in white shrouds as crowds lined up to pray for the dead, who are believed to have been killed late on Sunday.

A popular uprising against four decades of Assad family rule erupted a year ago and has become increasingly bloody as rebels fight a state forces' crackdown.

The United Nations estimates Syrian security forces have killed well over 7,500 people. The government says foreign militants are behind the unrest and are responsible for the death of more than 2,500 security forces.

The head of the United Nations urged President Bashar al-Assad to respond within the next few days and called military operations against a year-long uprising "shameful."

"The Syrian government has failed to fulfill its responsibility to protect its own people and instead has subjected its citizens in several cities to military assault and disproportionate use of force," said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. "These shameful operations continue."

RAPES AND SLIT THROATS

Government restrictions on media access have made it hard to assess conflicting reports by the authorities and activists of the mass killing reported on Monday.

A medical worker in Homs working in the rebel-held neighborhood of Khalidiya said many of the victims were killed with knives and some of the women appeared to have been raped.

"We received the bodies in two batches ... we tried to go to see if there were any survivors but they were all dead," said the medical worker, who called himself Yazan.

"I saw two females who were raped, one was around 12 or 13 years old. She was covered in blood and her underclothes were off. One of the women was strangled; she had bruises on her neck. Some of the bodies I saw, especially the children, had their throats slit."

The government and opposition each said the other side was to blame for the killings in Homs, where Syrian forces retook a rebel-held district on March 1 after a 26-day siege.

United Nations investigators on Monday said Syria subjected civilians to "collective punishment" and that its forces stand accused of carrying out executions and mass arrests in Baba Amr.

"The terrorist armed groups have kidnapped scores of civilians in Homs, killed and mutilated their corpses and filmed them to be shown by media outlets," state news agency SANA said.

The Local Coordination Committees of Syria, a grassroots opposition network, said at least 45 women and children had been stabbed and burned in the Homs district of Karm al-Zeitoun.

It said another seven people were slain in the city's Jobar district, near the former rebel bastion of Baba Amr.

Activists contacted in Homs accused pro-Assad "shabbiha" militiamen of carrying out the killings.

"HOW CYNICAL..."

At a special U.N. Security Council meeting on Arab revolts, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Assad had cynically launched military assaults while meeting with Annan.

"How cynical that, even as Assad was receiving former (U.N) Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the Syrian Army was conducting a fresh assault on Idlib and continuing its aggression in Hama, Homs, and Rastan," she told the Security Council.

Annan, who held talks with Qatari leaders before visiting Turkey, said he was trying to bring about a solution as swiftly as possible, and provide relief to civilians in the areas worst hit by the fighting between forces loyal to Assad and rebels.

"It is not going to be easy," he said. "It is going to take time, hopefully not too much time because we can't afford this to drag on for a while. Neither is it going to be solved today."

Russia and China have blocked attempts to pass a Security Council resolution condemning Damascus for its attempts to crush the rebellion. They want both sides to be encouraged to stop fighting. Saudi Arabia and Qatar, who wield heavy influence in the Arab League have taken a hawkish line, are calling for the rebels to be armed.

Clinton rejected Moscow and Beijing's effort to have international blame for the violence apportioned evenly between rebels and the government. She is to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the U.N. meeting.

"We reject any equivalence between premeditated murders by a government's military machine and the actions of civilians under siege driven to self-defense," she said.

The United States has drafted a new resolution, but Washington and Paris say they doubt it will be accepted.

China sounded an optimistic note, but gave no details.

"China has actively participated in discussion about this draft resolution, and raised its ideas about revising it," Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said on Monday.

"We also support the international community playing an active role in a political solution to the Syria issue."

China and Russia, as well as Western and Arab nations, have voiced support for Annan's peace mission, but no common ground has emerged between Assad, who is bent on crushing dissent, and his opponents, who are determined to overthrow him.

"The situation is so bad and so dangerous that all of us cannot afford to fail," Annan said in Damascus on Sunday.
