Chilean astronomer makes her mark

Chilean researcher Cinthya Herrera has not quite achieved her PhD in astronomy yet, but already she has notched up a notable success in her career.

The 27-year-old student has the distinction of publishing the very first science paper to come out of the Alma radio telescope.

This huge facility, going up in Chile's Atacama Desert, is set to revolutionise our understanding of the cosmos.

Ms Herrera's efforts will be followed by thousands more publications.

"I was really excited to be told my work was the first refereed paper accepted for publication based on Alma observations, but also I was extremely proud because Alma is in Chile," the young astronomer told BBC News.

Ms Herrera has been describing her studies here in Manchester at the UK National Astronomy Meeting (NAM).

Her investigations involved looking for star forming clusters resulting from the merger of a pair of spiral galaxies.

This collision, known as "The Antennae", lies about 70 million light-years away in the constellation of Corvus (The Crow).

It produces very turbulent regions of gas that must dissipate their energy if they are to condense and form new stars.

"With Alma and its wonderful resolution, we were able to trace the molecular mass of the gas and the structures that will form stars; and using another telescope run by the European Southern Observatory, we were able to trace the energy dissipation," Ms Herrera explained.

"The tracers we observe to do this are carbon monoxide in the case of Alma and molecular hydrogen in the case of the second telescope - the Very Large Telescope, also in the Atacama."

Details of the work have appeared in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

The data was acquired in the so-called science verification phase of Alma (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array).

The co-operative venture that includes the scientific and engineering inputs of Europe, East Asia, North America, and the host nation, Chile, is still only half-built.

Week by week, new radio antennas are being added to the observing network sited 5,000m above sea level on Atacama's Chajnantor plateau.

Right now, there are 22 of its 12m dishes in place with another seven 7m dishes also observing the sky.

It is planned there should be a total of 66 antennas when Alma becomes fully operational in the next couple of years.

The observatory's capabilities are keenly awaited by astronomers.

The unprecedented resolution it will achieve at longer wavelengths of light will allow scientists to study extremely cold objects in space - such as the dense clouds of cosmic dust and gas from which stars and planets form.

It is expected also to see very distant objects in the early Universe, including some of the very first structures to form more than 13 billion years ago.

Ms Herrera is currently studying in Paris, France, at the Institute of Space Astrophysics (IAS), but her intention is to return home to work on all the telescopes that take advantage of the great observing conditions in the high, dry Atacama.

"For the next few decades, I think Alma will be one of the greatest telescopes on Earth," she told the BBC.

Marshall Fine: Movie review: Wrath of the Titans - ye gods!

As I watched the final few minutes of Wrath of the Titans, I thought, "What I wouldn't give to be a 10-year-old boy right now."

That's absolutely the audience that will enjoy this silly, overblown special-effects extravaganza. At 10, you can still buy into the reality of wild fantasy; at that age, you live for the shocks and sensations of this kind of movie. It's the 10-year-old's meat-and-potatoes: movies built around explosions, outlandish monsters, fireballs and creatures made out of magma that drip lava. Oh yeah - and the clanging of swords.

Unless you're that age - and that undiscriminating - well, Wrath of the Titans is an unholy bore. Its most regular source of amusement is the clunky dialogue of Dan Mazeau and David Leslie Johnson and the sight of a panoply of otherwise-serious actors sporting the flowing robes and tresses of Hebrew prophets or, in this case, ancient Greek gods.

Ostensibly a sequel to 2010's similarly silly Clash of the Titans, with several of the same actors reprising roles, Wrath echoes last year's Immortals, offering the further adventures of demigod Perseus (Sam Worthington), who must stop the escape of the evil Titans - imprisoned in the Underworld - who want to overthrow the gods and destroy the Earth.

(Immortals actually dealt with Theseus - but the makers of this film give Perseus a couple of his adventures, including a battle against a minotaur.)

In this mythical mash-up, Ares (Edgar Ramirez), petulant god of war and unhappy son of Zeus, teams with the evil Hades (Ralph Fiennes) to drain the powers from Hades' brothers Zeus (Liam Neeson) and Poseidon (Danny Huston). In doing so, they'll set free Cronos, the evil titan who was father to Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. Got that?

When unleashed, Cronos will obliterate humanity, though Hades reconciles his role as Cronos' accomplice by noting that Cronos has promised him immortality. It feels as though these guys haven't really thought this through: If they destroy Earth, well, do the math.

It's up to Perseus, half-human son of Zeus, to team up with Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike) and fellow demigod Agedor (Toby Kebbell) to stop Ares and rescue Zeus. Do you doubt they will?

But director Jonathan Liebesman mistakes motion for action. His camera follows his heroes doggedly as they dodge giant rocks, rampaging cyclopses and flying fireballs, but the jumpy editing drains the imagery of tension, rather than enhancing it.

And here's the other thing about bad CGI-powered movies: The filmmaker is generally afraid to actually let you focus on any of his digital creations too long, lest the seams show. It doesn't matter whether it's a giant cyclops, a pro-wrestler-style minotaur or Cronos' double-torso warriors: He never stops to let you get a fix on what they actually look like. Consider the difference between trash like this and something like Avatar, where James Cameron gave the viewer long, loving looks at his all-CG images.

The 3D? Unnecessary as usual (unless you have allergies and are easily upset by images of floating dust motes that pop of the screen).

But then Wrath of the Titans is itself totally unnecessary. Unless you're a 10-year-old boy.

Inspiration Action = Creation: A few of the latest 60-second stories

Some thoughts on writing from the 60-second story project. This is an old post but I just ran across it and as I am about to start serious work on book two of the Fairy Godmother Diaries, it seemed like the perfect time to post this one.

11/20/10: "Yesterday's mythology is today's science, and today's mythology is tomorrow's science," Mr. Talbott said as he faced the class. "Tell me what that means." "Well," Matthew shrugged in his Letterman's jacket. "There was a time when we all thought that the sun revolved around the Earth and there were all sorts of myths and explanations associated with that. But now we know that it is in fact not the case. Now we know that everything revolves around me." (science)

11/21/10: Malina was a magnet. She was a magnet for dangerous men, for grand adventures, and for trouble with a capital T. Any man who would hook up with her was on seriously borrowed time. "Still," Thomas mused as he took in her impossibly long legs, lush figure, and flashing green eyes, "Some things are just worth dying for." (magnet)

11/22/10: (might be a tad disturbing): "You make it a habit to be right, don't you, Gabrielle?" Myron moaned as the restraints tightened. "Well," she replied as she gave the rack's wheel another turn. "I do think it's the right thing to do to apologize when you inconvenience someone and even more so when you eat their last cookie." (habit)

11/23/10: Long after the tremor faded, the flakes of ash danced on air currents before they landed on the sloping hills and scorched the earth raw. The few humans left still cowered in caves and avoided the boiling oceans. Rock and tree, bone, and sinew, the Earth's crust erupted again and the world turned to blood and fire. (flakes)

The longer I do these little mini-stories, the more I refine how I write. The idea that something starts from a spark of inspiration and then I create from that is not new to me. However, before I started this project, I tended to create willy nilly. I was buffeted by the winds of creative fate. Something would start and I would follow wherever it lead regardless of whether or not it was a good place. I also disregarded the idea that I might have conscious control over how to execute whatever creative project it was. I guess I felt that if I tried to control anything, the entire thing would "pffft" fizzle out and then I'd be left with nothing but a few burning embers but nothing substantive.

While working on these daily mini-stories, I've realized that while the spark (in this case, the prompt word) is necessary, it is not in control. I can choose the method with which I create the tale. I choose whether or not to write it immediately upon seeing the prompt word and let the story unfold as it will. Or, I can decide to wait and let the story develop that crucial beginning, middle, and end and begin writing only after I have an idea of what will happen.

In the above four examples from the last four days, I have two examples of each method.

Windows and Doors ? Affordable Upgrades for a Home | Tenth Floor ...

Windows and Doors Windows and Doors Affordable Upgrades for a HomeWindows and doors are able to turn the look of the house and cost less. With budget limitations there are infinite options with windows and doors. These ideas will suit any budget and please all tastes too.

The most affordable method to update your entrance charm is to modernize the color of the windows and doors. Be brave; try a color which pops like green or red. Depending on your decor and taste you won?t get wrong with this option. Home improvement merchants have color schemes which may help you decide. You could also purchase small sample colors and try it yourself. Acquiring high-end hardware might also keep the appearance very exclusive while staying in a budget. Deciding on a very expensive design of windows and doors wouldn?t be a bad option considering this will increase the value of your home. Home improvement merchants will have a number of contractors which will help you decide also.

Changing windows and doors can be another strategy to upgrade your home and also to bring advantage. Some of the top quality designs would not need expensive windows and doors treatments since the styles are fascinating.

Another great idea is placing iron work designs into your windows and doors. These design features is actually elegant, classy and distinctive. Normally you can find good companies focusing on ironwork designs online; however the most suitable option for windows and doors design might be a referral from your local home improvement merchant.

Ancient civilizations reveal ways to manage fisheries for sustainability

Friday, March 23, 2012

In the search for sustainability of the ocean's fisheries, solutions can be found in a surprising place: the ancient past.

In a study published on March 23 in the journal Fish and Fisheries, a team of marine scientists reconstructed fisheries yields over seven centuries of human habitation in Hawaii and the Florida Keys, the largest coral reef ecosystems in the United States, and evaluated the management strategies associated with periods of sustainability. The results surprised them.

"Before European contact, Native Hawaiians were catching fish at rates that far exceed what reefs currently provide society," said John "Jack" N. Kittinger, co-author and an early career fellow at the Center for Ocean Solutions at Stanford University. "These results show us that fisheries can be both highly productive and sustainable, if they're managed effectively." In contrast, historical fisheries in Florida were characterized by boom and bust, with serial depletions of highly valuable species for export markets. Today many species that were the target of 19th and early 20th century fisheries in Florida - including green turtles, sawfish, conch and groupers - have severely reduced populations or are in danger of extinction.

"Seven hundred years of history clearly demonstrate that management matters," said Loren McClenachan, co-author and assistant professor of environmental studies at Colby College. "Ancient Hawaiian societies used sophisticated tools similar to innovative conservation strategies used today, like marine protected areas and restrictions on harvest of vulnerable species like sharks." The difference, the authors explained, was in the way fisheries governance systems were structured. Regulations were developed locally with the buy-in of community members, but they were also effectively enforced with methods that now would be considered draconian. "Today, no management system comes close to achieving this balance, and as a result, resource depletion and collapse is common," said McClenachan.

The authors were able to characterize historical catch rates in Florida and Hawaii through an extensive review of archival sources, including species-specific catch records from the 1800s and archaeological reconstructions of human population densities and per-capita fish consumption back to the 1300s. Such information is relatively rare in coral reef areas. They then characterized management regimes associated with periods of high sustained yields using a variety of sources, including published work of Native Hawaiian scholars. This work revealed that sustainable fisheries existed during periods in which regulations were strict and socially enforced in ways that were often class and gender based. For example, many vulnerable species?like sharks and marine turtles?were reserved exclusively for high priests and chiefs.

Ancient Hawaiian societies depended entirely on local resources and needed creative ways to avoid resource collapse. For example, fishpond aquaculture was used to sequester nutrients and reduce pollution on reefs. In contrast, much of today's aquaculture requires large inputs of wild caught fish and antibiotics, often resulting in increased pollution. "Ancient Hawaiian society effectively practiced what we now call ecosystem-based management, which is something that modern society often struggles to achieve," says McClenachan. "Incorporating some of these ancient techniques into today's policy may be the key to sustaining our fisheries."

The authors of the study, entitled "Multicentury trends and the sustainability of coral reef fisheries in Hawai'i and Florida," point to the U.S. National Ocean Policy as an example of emerging attempts to manage ocean ecosystems more holistically, and local fisheries co-management as a modern way of including community members in designing effective fishing regulations. However, the authors caution that effective enforcement needs to go hand in hand with the development of local governance. "The ancient Hawaiians punished transgressors with corporal punishment," observed Kittinger. "Clearly, we don't recommend this, but it's easy to see there's room to tighten up today's enforcement efforts."

For Sustainable Home Renovations Shop ReStore to Benefit Habitat ...

Everyone knows the three basic tenants of living a sustainable lifestyle are reduce, reuse, and recycle. It can be challenging at times to put these ideals into practice especially when it comes to home improvements and renovations. Renovations, even simple DIY projects, can be expensive if you want to buy green and be eco friendly. There is a new option to the big box stores that will help you live a more sustainable lifestyle while simultaneously supporting a very worthy cause. This solution comes from well known nonprofit organization, Habitat for Humanity Canada.

Habitat for Humanity Canada, a charity that helps to build affordable housing for those in need, has opened ReStore stores. ReStore are retail locations run by Habitat for Humanity affiliates that collect and sell gently used and new home supplies. They also sell consumer returns, as well as overstock and end-of-line products. If you are renovating your kitchen and want to sell the old fixtures or have other perfectly good materials you no longer need, bring them into a ReStore location near you. If you are in the market for a reasonably priced home improvement project, ReStore is the place for you to go. Everything they sell is high quality and in good working condition, so there is no reason to be nervous about the quality of the items. The best part about the ReStore concept is that the proceeds generated go to help Habitat for Humanity Canada. This is an example of a triple bottom line retail option for a charity to use as a long-term fundraising initiative. Triple bottom line is a business concept that has become increasingly popular lately and since conscious consumers dictate market trends, it means that all business dealings are done with three things in mind: people, profit and the planet.

These ReStore retail locations are an eco-friendly option as many of the gently used, as well as consumer returns, overstock, and end-of-line products could have ended up in landfills. By finding a new purpose for these items those participating in the ReStore movement are contributing to their sustainable lifestyle and diverting waste from landfills.

Those interested in going to a ReStore location can easily find one near them, as there are 73 locations currently open across Canada and hundreds more in the United States. In fact, ReStore is a Canadian concept that was realized when volunteers opened the first store in Manitoba in 1991. The success of this project illustrates how a good fundraising concept can be expanded to have a lasting impact.

The ReStore concept is a perfect for those with a tight budget, as they are selling these items at a reasonable price. Plus, it?s a sustainable alternative to traditional stores. This retail option helps everyone involved since Habitat for Humanity is fundraising, items are being repurposed, and consumers are able to afford the improvements their homes may need. Perhaps this is the evolution of fundraising and conscious consumerism; either way this is an inventive initiative that is proving successful.

Whatever house you live in, whether it is a stately mansion or a small apartment in a busy city, the need for quality interior design and attractiveness is essential. After all, a home is a place that is used, by most people, as a place to both relax and socialise. As many will spend a significant time within their house, making it appear visually appealing yet comfortable is of high importance.

An often overlooked area of potential within the home is that of the windows. Often thought of as simply a functional device, windows can be dressed in decorative treatments that can, potentially, transform a room.
