(AP) ? Joining the battle to redefine Internet search, Yahoo is taking aim with a new browser enhancement it calls "Axis."

It alters browsers made by other companies to display search results in a more convenient and visual format.

The troubled Internet company Yahoo Inc. released Axis in Apple's app store late Wednesday. That version will work only on Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The software also can be installed as a plug-in on most major browsers used on desktop computers and laptops. Apps for other mobile devices are in the works.

A device running Axis can display search results in a panorama of visual thumbnails that can be scrolled through above a Web page. It's a departure from search engines' traditional presentation of a list of staid Web links that require more navigation and guesswork.

"Searching through links has outlived its utility," said Shashi Seth, a Yahoo Inc. senior vice president. "Users are demanding more now because we are all short on time."

All the major search engines are adopting new formats intended to make it easier for users to find information without clicking through to page after page.

Two weeks ago, Microsoft Corp. previewed an upcoming change that will spread Bing's search results in three columns, including one devoted to personalized recommendations pulled from Facebook, Twitter and other social networking services.

Last week, Google unveiled a new search feature called a "Knowledge Graph" that seeks to provide more immediate answers by highlighting information from a database containing more than 500 million entries about people, places and other commonly requested things.

The biggest challenge facing Axis may be overcoming the perception that Yahoo stopped innovating in search when it joined forces with Microsoft and started relying on Bing.

"If it's good enough and cool enough, people will go out of their way to get it," predicted IDC analyst Karsten Weide.

Yahoo is counting on Axis to reverse its steadily declining share of the Internet's lucrative search market and bring it more traffic from among the growing number of smartphone and tablet users.

Its greatest appeal figures to be on mobile devices because users with the app installed can see their search results at the top of the screen just by flicking on whatever page is displayed. The relevant results appear in a ribbon of Web page snapshots, making it easier for users to find the right information.

Much like Google's Knowledge Graph, Axis draws its results from a custom-built index. Most of the data in the Axis index resides on Yahoo's own services. If Axis can't find answers there, it presents links from Bing's search index.

Yahoo has relied on Bing's technology since 2010 as part of a decade-long partnership formed to lure users away from Google. So far, most of Bing's gains have come at Yahoo's expense, but Yahoo was losing search traffic well before it began leaning on Bing.

Yahoo's share of the U.S. search market stood at 13.5 percent through April, down from nearly 25 percent five years ago, according to the research firm comScore Inc. Bing holds a 15.4 percent share, up from 9.4 percent five years ago when Microsoft operated a search engine under a different name and system. Google's share has climbed from 56 percent five years ago to more than 66 percent now.

Yahoo's alliance with Microsoft gives it the flexibility to offer unique search features, such as Axis, that Bing doesn't have. Getting people to use its search engine more frequently is important to Yahoo because it keeps 88 percent of the revenue generated from requests made on its service, but none when a query is entered directly on Bing.

The erosion in Yahoo's Internet market share has been a major factor in a financial malaise that has caused the company's stock to slump for years and contributed to the management turmoil that has taken Yahoo through four CEOs ? including two interim leaders ? during just the past nine months, when it was working on Axis.

Yahoo won't show ads next to Axis search results initially, but the company believes the visual format will be ideal for video commercials and graphical marketing.

In an effort to make Axis even more useful, Yahoo plans to store search activity on its servers so users can have access to their past activity on any computer or mobile device where they log in. Axis will accept the logins that people use on Google and Facebook, as well as Yahoo.

98% The Island President

In the simultaneously inspiring and harrowing documentary "The Island President," Mohamed Nasheed was elected to the presidency of the Maldives, a 2000 island archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean, bringing an end to a thirty-year repressive dictatorship in 2008. But a new struggle presents itself in global warming. Currently, the effects there can be seen in erosion and the groundwater. All of which could lead to a unique culture and nation being literally wiped from the map, and its country's population turned into 'environmental refugees.' So, instead of spending valuable resources on health care and education, he has to go with sea walls and other protective measures. So, through this example, we get a disturbing look at what all of our futures may be like if we do not change our ways very soon.(With the use of some great shots, the Maldvies do seem like something out of speculative fiction.) If our behavior affects all others across the globe, then why can't the butterfly flap its wings in the opposite direction, which is where Nasheed comes in, not only in speaking across the world(I'm not recommending invoking World War II usually in speehces, but if you have to, mention Czechoslovakia), but also in proposing to make his country entirely carbon neutral in 10 years by relying on renewable energy sources like solar and wind, making the Maldives an example for the rest of the world. This is harder than it sounds with the economic interests of countries like China and India making things especially difficult with a memorable climax at the climate conference at Copenhagen in 2009. But sadly, Nasheed did not have that much time as he was ousted in a threatened coup in February of this year.

Nats win at Philly for 6th straight time

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:21 p.m. ET May 22, 2012

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals continued their domination of the Philadelphia Phillies.

The big surprise is they did it against ace Roy Halladay.

Jordan Zimmermann pitched six solid innings, and Ian Desmond and Rick Ankiel homered to lead the Nationals to a 5-2 victory Tuesday night.

Harper tripled, singled and drove in two runs for the Nationals, who won their third straight overall and beat the Phillies for the sixth straight time in Philadelphia - something that never had been done in the franchise's 43-year history. Washington has defeated Philadelphia in four of the five meetings this season and 13 of the last 16 overall.

Halladay (4-4) continued his indifferent season with his second-worst start of the season, going six innings and allowing five runs and nine hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

It was especially surprising against the Nationals, a franchise Halladay has dominated with an 11-1 record and 2.28 ERA in 16 career starts. His last loss to the Washington franchise came on June 28, 2002 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays against the then-Montreal Expos.

"You've got to be aggressive against him because he'll throw strikes," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said of Halladay. "He's a Hall of Famer, you better be up there swinging."

Harper did just that by belting the first pitch he saw, a 79 mph curveball, to right-center for a two-run triple in the third inning that put the Nationals in front for good, 2-1.

"He hung a curveball to the kid and he smoked it," Johnson said. "It was a turning point in the game as far as I'm concerned."

Said Harper, "I was looking for a first-pitch curveball and I got it. I was just trying to hit something up the middle and score some runs."

Erik Kratz homered for Philadelphia, which lost its season-worst fourth straight game while struggling once again with runners in scoring position. The Phillies have scored three runs in their last three games and are 5 for their last 38 with runners in scoring position.

"We do it about every night," Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel said. "It gets to the point where you're just trying to get somebody in. Our starting pitching, they're going to give up some runs. They're only human, too.

"We should be able to come back and win some games every now and then. How many times have we come back and won games being behind? We just don't put together enough. We don't hit the ball good enough to win the game."

Halladay's only worse start this season was May 2 at Atlanta when he gave up eight runs and 12 hits in 5 1-3 innings. After winning his first three decisions, Halladay is 1-4 with a 4.75 ERA in his last seven starts.

Manuel said the lack of run support could be having a negative effect on his ace.

"When you don't score enough runs or (a pitcher's) not getting very many runs, he thinks that he has to be too good and too fine," Manuel said. "He thinks that every batter is urgent to him. I've heard guys say they don't let it bother them. At times, it may not. At other times, it can."

Halladay admitted that he may have been trying to do too much, saying that all of the Phillies need to approach the game in a more relaxed manner.

"A lot of guys, including myself, are trying to carry the weight of the team. You can't do that," he said. "A lot of us need to go out there and have fun playing the game. You start pressing and it makes things worse."

Zimmermann (3-4) earned his first win in five career starts against Philadelphia, surrendering one run and seven hits in six innings. He entered 0-3 with a 6.00 ERA against the Phillies.

"I kept the fastball down and the slider was exceptionally good tonight," he said. "I was just going after them, attacking. I threw the ball a little more inside than I usually do."

Tyler Clippard, who was taking the place of demoted closer Henry Rodriguez, pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save in two chances. Johnson told reporters before the game that Rodriguez no longer would be the team's closer after converting 9 of 12 save opportunities this season. Johnson said he would go with a closer-by-committee approach.

The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Hector Luna's grounds-rule double to center before the Nationals scored four runs in the third.

After consecutive singles to open the inning by Zimmerann and Steve Lomardozzi, Harper tripled to deep right-center to give the Nationals a 2-1 lead. Harper scored on Adam LaRoche's sacrifice fly, and Desmond homered to left to put Washington up 4-1.

It was Desmond's eighth homer of the season and fourth in his last seven games.

Philadelphia catcher Carlos Ruiz was ejected by home-plate umpire Gary Cederstrom in the frame when he argued a called ball on the second pitch to Danny Espinosa, the final batter of the inning.

"He said he just told the umpire that that was a strike," Manuel said. "He said when he looked up at him, the guy threw him out of the game."

Said Halladay, "I didn't see anything wrong with what he did. He didn't turn around. He simply said the pitch was a strike. I've never seen one like that before. Unfortunately he's our best player and he gets run out of the game."

The Nationals tacked on a run in the fourth when Ankiel drove the first pitch he saw from Halladay over the fence in center.

As they have during the losing streak, the Phillies continued to struggle with runners in scoring position. The most glaring example Tuesday came in the third inning when Placido Polanco singled and Shane Victorino doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. But Zimmermann got Hunter Pence to strike out and Brian Schneider to fly out to center.

"I think it's him thinking that he definitely has to knock a run in and he's more apt to be kind of amped up," Manuel said of Pence, who is 1 for his last 21 with runners in scoring position. "When you're overanxious and stuff, you're definitely subject to chase balls out of the strike zone. That's what being overanxious and trying too hard is."

Philadelphia left two runners on base in the second through fifth innings.

The Phillies did get a run in the eighth on pinch-hitter Kratz's first career homer, a drive to center off reliever Tom Gorzelanny. Kratz was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley before the game after Jimmy Rollins was placed on the three-day Paternity List following the birth of his daughter on Sunday night.

Notes: Washington's Ryan Zimmerman was removed from the lineup with shoulder soreness just before the game after initially being slated to bat third and play third base. He was replaced by Chad Tracy. ... Phillies RHP Vance Worley will not need Tommy John surgery on his elbow after consulting with Dr. James Andrews. Worley has right elbow inflammation and indicated he has a bone chip and may need surgery after the season. . The crowd of 45,569 was the Phillies' 227th straight sellout and 243rd counting postseason play. .. Philadelphia LHP Cole Hamels (6-1, 2.48) is scheduled to face Washington RHP Edwin Jackson (1-1, 3.31) in the series finale Wednesday night. Hamels sparked a firestorm of controversy in his last start against Washington on May 6 when he intentionally hit Harper, an incident that earned Hamels a five-game suspension.

Small Business Consulting Firm Fosters Continuous Improvement ...

There are many management strategies for improving quality and efficiency within a company. Lean and six sigma are two that have gotten a lot of attention lately in the business world. However, these strategies and others like them often fail to bring about the long-term changes that they promise because a company lacks a commitment to quality improvement. A small business consulting firm like the Connell Curtis Group knows that the first step to improving quality is fostering a culture that values innovation and efficiency.

Continuous quality improvement, often referred to as CQI, is a theory of management that came out of the manufacturing sector. Continuous quality improvement means there is a long-term commitment to improving the processes and systems within an organization through changes in the culture within the company.? A quality improvement culture is both client-centered and data-driven. Creating a quality improvement culture at a company takes time and resources. A company may struggle to invest the initial time it takes to train personnel and then continually monitor the processes. However, just like exercising or cleaning your room it may take quite a commitment to begin with, but once it becomes a habit it will be easier to maintain and improve upon. That is why the commitment to quality needs to begin with the leaders of a company.

Whether a company has 10 employees or 10,000, it is up to the executive management team to prioritize quality improvement and communicate it to their employees. Creating an organized and efficient work environment takes time and training, and employees need to know that despite their workload, quality is their first priority. A company?s leadership is responsible for defining the purpose and attributes of a company?s commitment to quality. This may be summarized and communicated through the company?s mission statement, by a separate statement of their commitment to quality, or in their strategic plan. Whatever the mechanism, it needs to be well published and visible to everyone in the company.

While a continuous quality improvement culture starts at the top of the organization, it must also be supported and implemented throughout the entire firm?in all departments, at all levels, and with external stakeholders. It may take time to integrate the whole organization, but having buy-in from middle management to front line staff is important to ensure that all products and services meet quality standards, which is the foundation of CQI. Because employees are vital to fostering a work environment that emphasizes quality, don?t forget about the recruitment process. Integrate questions and scenarios into the interview process that allows you to evaluate whether they understand the values of CQI. New employees are an opportunity to integrate new ideas and encourage avenues for innovation among employees, but you need to be sure they will be a good fit in your organization.

Some academics and business strategists believe that continuous quality improvement is the best possible business culture because it fosters collaboration, flexibility, and above all, innovation. Small businesses are able to quickly adapt to the needs of their customers. However, as the company grows and develops more complex processes and systems, many organizations become unable to adapt to changes in the markets as quickly.? Therefore, committing to developing, implementing, and fostering a continuous quality improvement culture can keep your company from becoming rigid.? With help from a small business consulting firm like the Connell Curtis Group, you can make certain that your organization not only puts the best quality processes and procedures in place, but has a quality improvement culture that ensures your success.

Renovation Advice And Tips Which Will Help

If you or an individual you know is making preparations to make improvements in your house, it could not hurt to learn info so you know the job is getting correctly done. In the piece down below, you are going to be given valuable information to remember when fixing up your house.

When you replace old gear during a home-improvement project, always attempt to get the maximum energy efficient replacements you can afford. In many cases, a slight extra expenditure gets you appliances or building materials, that are much more efficient than the bargain-basement options. These small additional outlays will be quickly balanced by reduced energy and heating bills.

A great do-it-yourself to make is to add French doors or sliding glass doors. Not only do these doors permit more light inside, but they actually can open up an area and make it appear larger. The view of the outdoors increases the obvious volume of the room and modern energy-efficient doors save on heating and cooling costs.

To cut back your home?s energy costs, replace your present thermostat with one that may be programmed. Many families save close to $200 annual thru programmable thermostat use. A programmable thermostat can be set to modify when your folks are sleeping or out of the house, keeping you from paying for cooling and heating you do not need. They are also inexpensive, and can get picked up for less than $40.

Do not look at do-it-yourself as spending cash; home-improvement is about saving money. Getting newer appliances means saving on electricity. Fixing the roof and making improvements to the insolation of your place will save on heating costs. Learn the way to plan ahead and think about your finances constantly.

If you live in a home that was built before 1990, consider having your attic re-insulated with more recent materials and energy saving foam. Newer home insulation technology can help to save you hundreds of dollars in less than a year by bettering the overall efficiency of your heating and cooling systems.

One of the best ways to improve your heating and air condition system is to clean the air vents. You know the air vents are filthy when they look black. Dust the vents thoroughly. Check the vents now and then because if they turn black fast there could be a bigger problem.

While it is very nice to have a bigger home with more than sufficient space, it is not a good idea to get a house that has much more space than you actually need. You'll only finish up paying lots of cash on heating costs for space you do not even use.

An average-sized home that is poorly insulated can lose as much as 25 p.c of its heat during the autumn and winter months. While updating your loft with glass fiber insulation materials could appear like a significant cost up front, you'll quickly break even with the sum of money saved on your monthly heating bills.

To conclude, if it is you or someone you know who is preparing to make improvements to your home, it is smart to research home improvement tips. This way, you may know if what you're doing is the right thing. Follow the advice given to you in this post to successfully make repairs on your house.

Google CEO: Facebook 'holds users hostage' over data

11 hrs.

Google and Facebook aren't likely to ever friend or G-plus each other; the two compete intensely?over search, advertising and data collection. Google CEO Larry Page took quite a jab at Facebook on "The Charlie Rose Show," saying that Facebook is holding their "users hostage" when it comes to data sharing.

At issue is a longtime spat between the two Internet giants. Google used to let Facebook users import their Gmail contacts to Facebook if they wanted to do so. Then, in November, 2010, the search giant stopped allowing it because it said the?data flow was a one-way street with Facebook, which?doesn't let users share their Facebook contacts info with Gmail.

In the Monday night interview, Rose asked the Google CEO if he was worried about Facebook's "competition in search." Said Page (at about?12:48 minutes?into the interview): "It's something we take seriously?... I think it's been?unfortunate that Facebook has been pretty closed with their data."

Page said Google understands that when a user joins Facebook, he or she wants to be able to add their Gmail contacts to Facebook.?

"Google always said 'Fine, you can get them from Google.' The issue we had is that, then Facebook said, 'No, Google, you can't do the reverse. And so we just said, 'Well,?users don't understand what they're doing, they're putting data in, they don't understand they can't take it out ..??and so we said we'll only participate with people who have reciprocity. and we're still waiting (for reciprocity)."

The Google CEO was asked if he thought Facebook might change its position in the future.

I mean?hope so, I imagine they'll be forced to eventually, if they don't choose to. I think?the idea that you'd hold your users hostage and have some reasons for it that don't make sense ?... They claim it's a privacy issue, but it's not, really,?because they do it with Yahoo, they just don't do it with us. You don't want to be holding your?users hostage; we want there to be a competitive market ... so we think it's important that U.S. users of Google can take their data, and take it out if you need to, or take it somewhere else."

Asked about Page's remarks,?Facebook told msnbc.com it is declining to comment.

Life Is What You Make It ? Unless?

You?re a young child.

I?m a big listener of business books and self-improvement/leadership books on Audible.com. One of the recurring themes of success stories and case studies is that successful people and organizations make the best of what they are given (or faced with).

The thought occurred to me Saturday morning as I was returning from my walk pushing Boy in the stroller ? he was completely passed out for the previous 40 minutes so I had a lot of time to listen and ponder ? when I realized that his life is what WE make it. He can?t, at this point in his young life, ?make? anything of any situation. The best a toddler can do is figure out some way to cope with a bad situation and are oblivious to any sense of having a superb life.

Ellie May Carbon Fiber LegsIf you?re reading this, though, you can make things out of what you?re dealt with. There comes a point in everyone?s lives where they have the ability to look at the situation they are in and make a conscious decision to look for/at the bright side, overcome restrictions or constraints, and become a stronger, better person than they would be without such an experience.

Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin brands, is dyslexic. So severely so, he was discounted in school and had to learn from comic books and constantly use tutors in college. He?s not alone, as there are hundreds of success stories like his about people who have overcome, nay ? harnessed, their problems, failures, and disabilities to become household names or hidden creatures who have shaped the world we live in today.

Unless you?re a child who can?t grasp what it is to look adversity in the face and slap it silly, slit its throat, or blow its brains out, you have a choice to make when adversity does its thing.

What kind of person are you? Are you going to let CF stand in your way of doing something great or are you going to lie down and give up?

I?d rather live a life worth having than a life spent wishing.
