Train Your Dog To Behave In All Circumstances | Love My Pets GPS ...

TIP! Familiarity with your dog?s food preferences will help you to train your dog. Your dog will be more likely to respond to your training efforts when the food reward is something he likes.

Many negative behaviors and habits can be removed from a dog. This article will help you to stop excessive barking, unwarranted growling and overall rowdiness. If you train your dog correctly, he or she will be the ideal pet.

TIP! Keep dog training techniques positive and upbeat. Remain motivated, even when training gets tough.

Dogs can concentrate on one thing intensely and you will have to learn to break his attention. When a command is reinforced properly and often enough, your dog will begin to shift his focus from the distractions around to you in order to wait for your signal.

TIP! Your dog needs to be active frequently. Dogs can get bored quite easily.

For a happier and more content dog, be sure to provide it with things to do that will stimulate its thinking and keep its mind active. Long walks through the woods or park should happen frequently as should playful interactions with a variety of toys. A bored pooch find ways to be entertained, like chewing up your favorite books and shoes. Give your dog something to do, and you will both be happier.

TIP! Don?t be ashamed to ask for help if your training program doesn?t change your dog?s behavior. Particularly if you are struggling to achieve the results you desire, professional help may be just what you need.

If you don?t monitor treat-style training rewards, your dog might become overweight. The number of treats a dog gets during training can rack up pretty quickly, and a lot of owners overlook this part of their canine?s diet.

TIP! Go on a long walk with your dog if you plan to be away from the house a long time. Wearing him out may minimize his anxiety at being separated from you.

When training your dog, always be sure that it feels safe. If dogs feel afraid, unprotected or unsafe in anyway, they will start to lash out or show other types of poor, defensive behavior. In order to eliminate this, you should ensure that you put your dog in a safe surrounding.

TIP! To train a dog to be well-behaved, be certain that all members of your family and all of your friends adhere to your instructions regarding training. Your dog needs consistent lessons everyday.

Introductions to other animals should be done very slowly. Always take stock of your current family pets and how they will react to a new pet. Your new pet should have a personality that would complement your current one, so you can maximize bonding.

TIP! A clicker can be a useful tool for positive reinforcement. To start using a clicker, all you need to do is make a positive association between the noise the clicker makes and great things happening.

There are a lot of tricks you can teach your dog to do; a common one is training him to hold a toy in his mouth without chewing it. When he does pick up and hold a toy in his mouth, reward him with a treat. Wait until he puts the toy near his mouth after he performs these actions a few times. After he picks up the toy you will want to click the clicker and give him a treat. Next, only give him a reward if he holds the toy using his mouth.

TIP! Learn about other methods of positive reinforcement, rather than just offering treats. You will find that treats do work.

When it comes to training your dog, never give up. You must supply constant reinforcement for your dog; if you fail to do this, the dog may forget what you taught it. Realize that training your dog is a daily task, no different than feeding and sheltering it.

TIP! Your dog should not get to choose when he will and will not listen. Avoid trying to teach a command if you are not fully prepared to enforce a proper response.

Obedience classes are good ways to train your dog to follow your commands. The instructors in the classes can help you with a wide variety of problems that your dog may have, from not listening to your commands, to stopping bothersome barking, to sitting when you tell it to.

TIP! It may look like a harness is more comfortable for a dog, but it can actually prove to give you less control than even cinching type collars would. Using a combination of the collar and harness and only tugging on the collar when necessary, teaches the dog that he must obey while in the harness as well.

A healthy diet is important to the health and well-being of your dog. If the dog?s diet is poor, it is not good for their health. It can make your dog behave badly and is not good for their health. A simple improvement to their diet will work wonders in how a dog feels, and make it much easier for them to have a clear mind during training.

TIP! Always address your dog by name to ensure they get used to what name you?ve given it. Your dog must respond when its name is called before you move onto more advanced training.

Anytime you hire a professional, you need to look into their background, check references and interview them, and the same is true for a behavior specialist for animals. As there is no set rule for the best way to train a dog, this aspect is open to interpretation and you want the animal behavior trainer to have the same ideals and thoughts as your own.

TIP! Give your dog new challenges often. Test the dog occasionally to check his memory, even though both of you know that he remembers his commands.

Some dog owners tend to make the entire training process more complicated than it needs to be. With solid information and a good mindset on the part of the owner, dog training can happen. It is possible to train your dog successfully by yourself

NASA Sends First Images of Rover on Mars

NASA/JPL-Caltech

NASA's Curiosity rover landed on Mars Monday. An image from Curiosity, through a wide-angle lens on the left-rear side of the rover. More Photos ?

PASADENA, Calif. ? NASA followed up its picture-perfect landing of a plutonium-powered rover Sunday night with a picture of the balletic Mars landing ? as well as some well-earned self-congratulation about what the accomplishment says about NASA?s ingenuity.

?There are many out in the community who say NASA has lost its way, that we don?t know how to explore ? we?ve lost our moxie,? John M. Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA?s science mission directorate, said at a post-landing news conference, where beaming members of the landing team, all clad in blue polo shirts, crammed in next to the reporters. ?I want you to look around tonight, at those folks with the blue shirts and think about what we?ve achieved.?

That achievement, in the early hours of Monday morning Eastern time, was indeed dramatic: with the eyes of the world watching, the car-size craft called Curiosity was lowered at the end of 25-foot cables from a hovering rocket stage, successfully touching down on a gravelly Martian plain.

For the world of science, it was the second slam-dunk this summer ? the first one being the announcement last month that the Higgs boson, a long-sought particle theorized by physicists, had likely been found. But while the focus of high-energy physics world has shifted overseas to CERN, the European laboratory, the United States remains the center of the universe for space, ahead of Russia, Europe and China, and for NASA, it was a chance to parry accusations of being slow, bloated and rudderless.

?If anybody has been harboring doubts about the status of U.S. leadership in space,? John P. Holdren, the president?s science adviser, said at the news conference, ?well, there?s a one-ton automobile-size piece of American ingenuity. And it?s sitting on the surface of Mars right now.?

Now that it has reached Mars, Curiosity ushers in a new era of exploration that could turn up evidence that the Red Planet once had the necessary ingredients for life ? or might even still harbor life today. Far larger than earlier rovers, Curiosity is packed with the most sophisticated movable laboratory that has ever been sent to another planet. It is to spend at least two years examining rocks within the 96-mile crater it landed in, looking for carbon-based molecules and other evidence that early Mars had conditions friendly for life.

On Monday, NASA released a photograph taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, showing Curiosity still encased in the descent capsule as it sailed under a parachute 210 miles below.

?You can see the lines on the parachute,? said Sarah Milkovich, a NASA scientist who works with the orbiter camera.

NASA officials were working to give Dr. Holdren a framed print of the photograph to show President Obama.

Only one other country, the Soviet Union, has successfully landed anything on Mars, and that spacecraft, Mars 3 in 1971, fell silent shortly after landing. So far, this rover appears to be healthy.

?There?s a lot ahead of us, but so far we are just ecstatic about the performance of the vehicle,? said Jennifer Trosper, one of the mission managers. As the spacecraft sped toward its destination on Sunday, the pull of Mars?s gravity accelerating it to more than 13,000 miles per hour, officials tried to tamp down concerns that a crash would entirely derail future plans.

?A failure is a setback,? said Doug McCuistion, the Mars exploration program director. ?It?s not a disaster.?

The Curiosity landing seemed particularly risky. Engineers chose not to use the tried-and-true systems used in the six previous successful landings, neither the landing legs of the Viking missions in 1976 nor the cocoons of air bags that cushioned the two rovers that NASA placed on Mars in 2004. Those approaches, they said, would not work for a one-ton vehicle.

Instead, for the final landing step, they came up with what they called the sky crane maneuver. The rover would be gently winched to the surface from a hovering rocket stage.

As the drama of the landing unfolded, each step proceeded without flaw. The capsule entered the atmosphere at the appointed time, with thrusters guiding it toward the crater. The parachute deployed. Then the rover and rocket stage dropped away from the parachute and began a powered descent toward the surface, and the sky crane maneuver worked as designed.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: August 6, 2012

An earlier version of this article contained a picture caption that misidentified the day on which the Curiosity rover landed on Mars. It landed early Monday morning, Eastern time, not Sunday.

Testers fear reality of genetically modified Olympians

LONDON (Reuters) - There have been "marathon mice", "Schwarzenegger mice" and dogs whose wasted muscles were repaired with injected substances that switch off key genes. It may not be long before we get the first genetically modified athlete.

Some fear the use of gene therapy to improve athleticism is already a reality. But since sports authorities' drug testing methods still lack the sophistication needed to pick up gene doping, its status remains unclear.

What is certain, from scientific studies and from surveys of elite sports people, is that it is technically feasible to use genetic modification to improve sporting performance, and that some athletes are prepared to risk their lives if they could be guaranteed to win gold medals.

Officially, UK Anti-Doping, the body which oversees the control of performance enhancing drugs in Britain, says genetic manipulation as a form of performance enhancement "is currently a theoretical rather than a proven issue".

But Andy Parkinson, UKAD's chief executive said: "I wouldn't be surprised if someone out there is trying to do it, and I think that's very worrying."

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) says it is ploughing "significant" money and resources into research into finding ways to detect genetic enhancement of athletes.

NEW GENETIC MAKE-UP

Gene doping - in which DNA is introduced into the body using an inactivated virus or by other means - could alter a person's genetic make-up and improve athletic performance by increasing muscle growth, blood production, endurance, oxygen dispersal or pain perception.

Since it cannot be detected, no one really knows whether athletes are using it or not.

Chris Cooper, a professor of sports and exercise science at Essex University and author of a book called "Run, Swim, Throw, Cheat" thinks it is "hugely unlikely anyone is gene doping" and says the focus should be on people who use well-known performance enhancers like anabolic steroids and blood doping.

However, emails that surfaced during a trial of a German track and field coach Thomas Springstein in 2006 showed that people behind some athletes were at least thinking about genetic modification as a way forward.

Scientists who lead the field in developing gene therapy techniques in laboratory animals have also reported being inundated with enquiries from sports people keen to know more.

"There are animal models which show efficacy and the possibility of this being technically feasible for an athlete to do," said Andy Miah, a bioethicist and director of the Creative Futures Institute at the University of the West of Scotland.

The drug mentioned in the 2006 German court case was Repoxygen - a gene therapy developed by the British biotech Oxford Biomedica as a treatment for severe anemia.

The company has since pulled the plug on developing the product as it seemed unlikely to be profitable as a medicine.

Yet an email written by coach Springstein to a Dutch doctor suggested some in the sports world were already keen.

"New Repoxygen is hard to get," Springstein wrote. "Please give me new instructions soon so that I can order the product before Christmas."

Repoxygen is based on a direct injection of an inactivated virus carrying the gene for EPO, or erythropoietin, a hormone beloved by athletic dopers seeking to artificially boost their red blood cells and aerobic capacity.

MARATHON MICE

Repoxygen is just one of a number of scientific developments that caught the eye of potential sports dopers.

Lee Sweeney, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, has pioneered research into gene transfer technology and developed various super-sporty lab mice to test its potential.

In 2007, while researching possible ways to restore muscle growth in patients with muscular dystrophy, Sweeney and his colleagues created mice in a lab who continued to have enormous muscles and significant strength into old age.

The super mice were created by injecting normal mice with a virus containing the gene for insulin growth factor 1, or IGF-1, a protein that interacts with cells on the outside of muscle fibers and makes them grow.

They were nicknamed "Schwarzenegger mice" after the American bodybuilder and film star-turned politician. Scientists later reported success in treating dogs with wasted muscles with the same therapy.

These experiments followed hot on the heels of "marathon mice", which hit the headlines in 2004 after researchers genetically engineered the lab animals by tweaking a gene called PPAR-delta.

The scientists found the genetically engineered mice could run twice as far as normal mice, and they stayed lean even when they were fed on a high-fat diet.

"So there's a technical precedent for this (performance enhancing genetic modification), but it's still uncertain quite how it would effect humans," said bioethicist Miah.

"And of course there are uncertainties about how those animals are effected in other ways - does it affect their fertility? Their longevity?"

In his book, Cooper relates the tale of an experiment conducted by Jim Wilson, one of Sweeney's colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania, who tested EPO gene therapy in macaque monkeys.

It initially worked as expected, increasing oxygen transport in the monkeys' blood. But the high concentrations of EPO soon produced so many red blood cells that the blood became like sludge and needed to be thinned at regular intervals.

Then the monkeys' EPO levels suddenly plummeted, leading to severe anemia and forcing the scientists to end the experiment and euthanise the animals.

"These studies show that of all the doping techniques we are talking about ... gene doping is currently by far the most technically difficult and risky to attempt," Cooper writes.

GOLD MEDALS - TO DIE FOR?

Yet while such potentially life-threatening and unknown side effects are a major concern for people seeking to develop medicines to treat sick patients, would-be genetically modified Olympians may take a different view.

Experts said that to evaluate whether something as risky and unproven as gene doping is being tried in sports, it's important to see just how far athletes might go in pursuit of gold medals.

A frequently-cited survey in the world of sport gives a bleak picture. In it, Chicago-based Bob Goldman, a doctor and founder of the U.S. National Academy of Sports Medicine, asked elite athletes in the 1980s whether they would take an enhancement which guaranteed them gold medals but would also kill them within five years. More than half said yes.

"I was shocked to see that out of 198 world-class athletes, 52 percent would be willing to give up their life for five years of an undefeated run of wins," Goldman told Reuters during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

He repeated the survey every two years for the next decade and the results were always the same - around half of the athletes polled were ready to die for gold. "Some of the athletes are only 16-years-old," Goldman said. "To be willing to die at 21 is a serious psychological mindset."

While no-one can be sure if genetically modified Olympians are swimming in pools or running on tracks right now, the lure of winning gold may make athletes more willing than most to take a dangerous genetic leap into the unknown.

"That's partly why the world of sport is so concerned," said Miah. "They know that if athletes had something that would give them the opportunity to win medals, but would kill them 5 years later, many of them would take it.

"This is a community of high risk takers."

Lemon Sponge Pie from Tv Food and Drink, Brought to you by Gary ...

This is my first month participating in the Burwell General Store Recipe Swap.? Burwell General Store is a fantastic food blog run by my new friend Christianna who I recently met while working on Beat the Chefs for Game Show Network. Though we were on the same show, we actually have only been in the presence of one another a handful of times. ?Nevertheless, as is often the case when two foodies with extroverted personalities run into one another, it was admiration at first sight.

Once a month Christianna sends to all the Burwell swapping participants a recipe from? The Second Ford Treasury of Favorite Recipes From Famous Eating Places,?compiled in 1954. ?Participants are asked to re-create the recipe and put their own spin on it in the process. ?This month it was Lemon Sponge Pie, as presented by the Old Court House Tea Room in New Castle, Delaware.

As I am of the type to duly investigate a subject before diving in (see my post on Heidi Bohay and the NuWave oven), I pulled the old Google off the shelf and learned what I could about the Tea House?s history before deciding on my ?in? for changing up the recipe. ?Here?s what I learned:

There?s great debate on how old the New Castle Court House actually is, though a 1952 article from Wilmington?s The Sunday Star confirms that the Delaware state constitution was adopted there in the 1780s. The accompanying Tea Room, however, didn?t open its doors until 1926, when it began luring in with food and drink the Delaware passengers lining up to board the ferry to New Jersey.

A quick call to the court house informed me that the tea room disappeared in the early 1950s. According to the court house supervisor/museum curator, its fate was sealed in April 1945 when the Delaware State Highway Department authorized construction of a bridge which would connect New Castle to Pennsville, New Jersey, thus eliminating the need for the ferry. ?No ferry meant no line of people outside the tea room, and no line of people meant lots of Oolong and lemon sponge cake left untouched in the kitchen. On August 15, 1951, The Del Memorial Bridge officially opened? the final nail in the coffin for the birthplace of this month?s recipe.

Here?s something else:?On July 2, 1938, a 10 year old Shirley Temple?lunched at the Old Court House Tea Room?with her parents, business manager, and friends. Shirley had a chicken sandwhich, a piece of cheese, and a chocolate milkshake! Over 300 people turned out to greet Shirley on Delaware Street up on her exit. ?No word on whether she took the ferry to Jersey.

So I decided to take my cue for twisting up this month?s?recipe from Miss Temple?s visit to the Tea room. ?I have yet to read anywhere that lemon sponge pie pairs well with chicken or cheese, so I zeroed in on the chocolate, adding an Oreo crust for the bottom and a chocolate shell for the top. ?I won?t say it made for the most attractive pictures as no matter how delicately I pierced the shell on top it immediately cracked into chocolate shards each time. ?But the flavor combination more than made up for what this rich, citrusy dessert lacked in camera flair.

You can check out my recipe, and the rest of the Burwell interpretations below.

Lemon Sponge Pie

For the pie:

  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs, separated
  • 2 Tbsp flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • Juice of 3 lemons
  • Grated rind of one lemon

For The Crust:

  • 2 1/2 cups Oreo Cookies (or chocolate wafers or chocolate graham crackers)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 stick of butter (6 tablespoons)

For the Chocolate Topping:

  • 5 ounces 72% cacao chocolate
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon dark corn syrup

Make the crust: ?Pulse the Oreos (or wafer or graham crackers) in a food processor until fine and granular. ?You can also put them in a closed plastic bag and crush with a spoon until you reach the same consistency. ?Next, melt the butter in the microwave. ?Combine the melted butter with the sugar and granulated chocolate particles (if you?re going with Oreos, the quarter cup of sugar is ? used guessed it ? totally necessary! ;) ). ?Press ingredients into 9-inch buttered pie pan, making sure to cover all sides.?Bake for 10 minutes at 325?F and remove. ?Let cool.

For the pie: ?Cream butter and blend with sugar, egg yolks, flour, milk, lemon juice and rind. ?Beat egg whites separately and fold into mixture. ?Pour into pie crust and bake in oven at?350?F ?for approximately 45 minutes.

To make the chocolate shell topping:?Combine chocolate and butter in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 30 seconds and then stir, repeat, heating in 15 second increments until butter is just melted and smooth. Stir in corn syrup. Set mixture aside until it is only slightly warm to touch.

Pour chocolate mixture over cooled pie and spread to completely cover the top of the pie. Refrigerate overnight or at least four hours to allow pie filling to set completely and chocolate top to harden. Store covered.

Classy Clutter: Refurbishing Metal Patio Furniture

Metal patio furniture is some of the longest lasting and most durable furniture that money can buy. If you have had some metal patio furniture for an extended period of time, you may start to notice that it looks old after a while. If your metal patio furniture doesn't look quite as good as it once did, you should be able to refurbish it, to make it look new again.

Refurbishing Metal Patio Furniture

In the home improvement industry today, there is a growing trend involving refinishing metal patio furniture. Homeowners secure reclaimed furniture, buy used furniture or simply fix up their existing patio furniture. By doing this, you can get some great deals on patio furniture that will look like new once you are done working on it. You can sometimes find better products and what you can find in the market today. Many of the older pieces have a certain look that you can't find anywhere else as well.

Preparing the Surface

When you are interested in refurbishing your old metal patio furniture, you have to make sure that it is prepped correctly before starting the job. The surface has to be ready for any refinishing processes that you may undertake. Many pieces of old metal furniture have rust on them from being exposed to the elements for so many years. If you try to refinish the surface with rust on it, you will run into problems. This means you'll need to get rid of the rust first.

You should be able to use a wire brush or some?steel wool?to get rid of the rust on the edges of the furniture. Make sure the surface of the metal patio furniture is smooth when you're done with this process.

Fill Any Cracks or Holes

In some cases, your metal patio furniture may have cracks or holes in the exterior. If this is the case with your furniture, use a filler material to fill them in. You don't want any holes in the surface of the metal, as it can cause problems down the line. Give the filler plenty of time to dry before moving on to the next part of the process.

Refinish the Surface

Once the surface is smooth and ready to go, it's time to refinish. There are A number of different products that you could use to refinish the surface. Consider using a?penetrant?paint to get down into the surface of the metal. There are also some metal finishes that you could rub onto the surface. Make sure that whatever product you use, it is rated for outdoor use on metal surfaces.

Fix the Hinges or Wheels

Depending on what type of outdoor furniture you have, you may have some hinges or wheels on the furniture that need to be addressed. For these, consider using a?water resistant silicone lubricant. This will help lubricate the area without leading to rust along the way.

Regardless of how you decide to refinish your furniture, make sure that you choose a color scheme that goes with the rest of your outdoor decor. It can make a big difference in the quality of the job overall.

Thanks Liz for contributing your guest post! Would you like to guest post on our blog? Email us at classyclutter4 (at) gmail (dot) com.

Renowned Romanian pianist Ursuleasa dead at 33

(AP) ? Internationally renowned Romanian pianist Mihaela Ursuleasa has been found dead in her apartment in the Austrian capital. She was 33.

The musician's agent, Andreea Butucariu, said in a statement from Berlin Friday that Ursuleasa had died on Thursday from the effects of a cerebral hemorrhage and asked for her family's privacy to be respected. Police in Vienna confirmed the cause of death.

Butucariu told Romanian media that Ursuleasa had recently cancelled two concerts in the Romanian capital, Bucharest, on unspecified health grounds.

Ursuleasa began playing the piano at 5 years old under the guidance of her Gypsy jazz musician father in then communist Romania. She obtained a grant to study in Vienna at 12, a year after communism collapsed.

She went on to play at New York's Carnegie Hall, with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester in Berlin, with Orchestre National de France and also with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Romanian soprano Felicia Filip on Friday reminisced about Ursuleasa's debut. "In my mind's eye I see the child lost in the immensity of the piano," she told Romanian news agency Mediafax, referring to one of the pianist's first public performances. "I recall a child who couldn't reach the piano pedals," she said.

"Mihaela was a huge pianistic talent with great musical instincts," said Bill Capone, managing director of Arts Management Group, who represented her. "Her untimely passing is very tragic and left those who knew her as an artist and person deeply saddened."

Ursuleasa is survived by a 5-year-old daughter. In a statement on the pianist's website, Butucariu asked that promoters "that had invited Mihaela for the next months" contribute towards an account for her daughter.

He said her funeral would be held next week, but provided no details where she would be buried.

"Artists like Mihaela are those who give us hope, help us feel and make us understand that music, and also art, prevails above everything else; that it makes us advance as human beings," Butucariu said in the statement.

"They make us realize that we are on the right path when we open not our eyes and ears but our hearts to listen, expecting music making to move us and take us someplace else. This is what Mihaela's music did."

Heart of Peoria church begins to rebuild

PEORIA, Ill. -- Peoria's oldest Protestant church is beginning the first chapter of a new phase.

Downtown Peoria's First United Methodist Church held a groundbreaking ceremony Sunday morning.

The church's nearly $9 million expansion project will include upgrades to areas like the children's wing and soup kitchen and the addition of a new multi-purpose facility, located at 116 NE Perry Ave.

Pastor Bob Phillips says it's all part of the church's commitment to remain downtown.

"We also realized that by staying in the heart of the city, we can remain accessible to a lot of folks who stand in need of the kinds of things we offer," said Pastor Phillips, "whether it's the soup kitchen, our ministry to those with HIV, the tutoring programs, the other kinds of things we do that are right around the church."

The new multi-purpose building is expected to be complete next June, all other renovations by next winter.

Pastor Phillips says so far, the church has raised more than $6 million.

For more information, visit the church's website, at http://www.fumcpeoria.org.
