A horse by any other name | Chantal Sutherland

Game on Dude

There?s a racehorse, currently running in major competitions, with the name ?Game On Dude.? I?m not kidding.

But the horse, ridden by jockey Chantal Sutherland, has a rather tame moniker by conventional horse-naming standards. A quick Internet search ??which yields nothing but the truth, every time ? reveals the names of horses currently active in the racing circuit: Breakwind, Homewrecker, Nag Nag Nag, Tabasco Cat, Hello Newman, Let?s Elope, Your Place Or Mine, Aphrodesiac, and Rambling Willie, just to name a few.

Click here to see original article.

It can be argued, anecdotally, that horses understand shame. Good thing they don?t also understand English.

When it comes to animal names, horses belong in a special category. The same Internet search reveals little about the history of horse-naming, which is a shame, because I feel it would be enlightening ? nay, revelatory ? to understand why cats and dogs often get saddled with the standard ?Whiskers? and ?Buttons,? while a prize stallion can command such arresting titles as ?Salmon Leap? and ?Shower Scene.? (Both real horses, by the way.)

Standard pet names, while far less embarassing for the animal, are also far less adventurous. My family had several pets when I was growing up, and perhaps the most creatively named was a tiny Shih Tzu dog named Cujo, after the rabid St. Bernard in the like-titled Stephen King novel. Cute, I suppose, to name a miniscule yapper dog after a big, menacing killer canine, but still no great shakes compared to, say, ?Stevie Wonderboy.?

So why are horse names so unique? One reason may be that prize racehorses are much more rare than a housecat or dog, and demand something with an extra dose of creative energy. It also makes the horse stand out on a race card; ?Alphabet Soup? is more eye-catching than ?Tim,? athough, considering most race cards look like a list of discarded names for ska bands, Tim might be a standout.

Still, it seems unfair that horse owners get to have all the fun. Giving a dog a racehorse name may complicate matters when calling it from across the street, but it would almost be worth it for the hilarity of seeing someone screaming, ?Odor In The Court! Odor In The Court!? to a confused-looking terrier.

Cats? Well, cats are easy. They don?t respond to their names anyway, so one could conceivably give them a name culled from a flowery passage in ?Great Expectations.? Wouldn?t it be rad to have your fingers licked by the sandpaper tongue of Miss Havisham?s Wedding Dress? Or rub the belly of The Convict Abel Magwitch?

And there?s no need to end there. The Pied Pipers among us, those with veritable zoos of caged animals in their homes, could have a field day. Think about it: A guineau pig named Your Mama?s So Fat. A parrot named Captain Jack?s Rum. I?m Your Venus, the lovable mouse. I?d suggest buying four turtles and naming them after Renaissance painters, but that would probably just open you up to copyright infringement.

Point being, horse breeders and jockeys have had a monopoly on creative animal-naming for far too long. They?re ridiculous and giggle-inducing and astoundingly impractical, but unless your pet is a chimpanzee fluent in sign language, you?re probably safe.

Don?t get me wrong ? Snowball is a perfectly cute name for a poodle. Any cat called Mittens will not be immune to my chin-scratching fingers. Call your bulldog Buster, if you absolutely have to.

But a pet name, moreso than a baby name, is an opportunity for creative writing. Human children need practical names that won?t result in the backs of their necks being pelted with spitballs. But for a caged rat, Hobo?s Gunny Sack isn?t out of the question.

Think about it the next time you?re at a pet store looking at parakeets and tropical fish. Let Game On Dude be your inspiration: If it?s good enough for a horse, consider what it could do for a gerbil.

Pope's butler faces trial for leaking documents

Pope Benedict's former butler will be tried on an aggravated theft charge over leaking documents claiming corruption in the Vatican. There is also a computer expert charged with involvement in the case.

By Philip Pullella and Naomi O'Leary,?Reuters / August 13, 2012

A Vatican magistrate on Monday ordered Pope Benedict's former butler to stand trial on charges of aggravated theft for leaking documents alleging corruption in the Vatican.

In a 35-page document on the case which has rocked the Holy See since Paolo Gabriele was arrested last May, the Vatican also charged a computer expert who worked in the Vatican bureaucracy with involvement in the case, the first mention of a second man.

The layman, named as Claudio Sciarpelletti, was also ordered to stand trial, although on lesser charges of aiding and abetting a crime.

The Vatican said it was not clear when the trial would be held but it would not be before the end of September.

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said the pope, as the sovereign head of Vatican City, could intervene at any time to stop the trial or pardon Gabriele. But he did not know if the pontiff would do so.

If found guilty Gabriele, who worked in the pope's private apartments serving him meals and helping him dress, could face six years in jail under the laws of the papal state.

According to the document, Gabriele told investigators he had acted because he saw "evil and corruption everywhere in the Church" and wanted to help root it out "because the pope was not sufficiently informed".

In a section that referred to Gabriele's state of mind, he told investigators that after he had started copying documents and leaking them, "I reached the point of no return and could not control myself anymore".

He continued: "I was sure that a shock, perhaps by using the media, could be a healthy thing to bring the Church back on the right track".

The indictment order also revealed that a cheque made out to the pope for 100,000 euros, a gold nugget and a 16th century book were found in Gabriele's house in a search, objects which the butler said he intended to give back.

The documents leaked earlier this year alleged corruption in the Vatican's dealings with Italian companies, including the payment of inflated prices for services, and detailed rivalries between cardinals and clashes over the running of the Vatican bank.

LONDON (AP) ? For skeptics, the Olympics were deliciously doomed: London's transport network would surely fail, Britain's athletes would flop, rain would prevail and terrorists would strike. But then the sun came out after months of sodden skies, vehicles moved briskly, there were no attacks and British athletes reeled in a shocking 65 medals.

On Monday, as international athletes and visitors poured out of London and the city's 8 million residents resumed their normal lives, British officials hailed the 2012 Olympics as an unqualified success. Even the naysayers predicting doom and gloom had to eat their words.

"I was moaning like everyone else before the games, thinking the roads would be packed and nothing would work," said London shopkeeper Yvette Tracton, 28. "But it's been brilliant."

Celebrations kicked off around the country as athletes returned home to cheering crowds. Leeds gave a special reception to three medalists, including triathlon gold and bronze-winning brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee.

"It's been a fantastic week in London, but to come home to Leeds is better than anything else," said Alistair. His brother Jonathan described the thousands on hand for their hero's welcome as "absolutely incredible," saying he hadn't realized how much their success galvanized supporters back home.

Some 116,000 people were leaving Monday from Heathrow airport, London's busiest hub, compared with 95,000 for a typical August day. Gatwick Airport was handling 70,000 departing passengers, 15 percent more than usual. Airports had come under scrutiny in the months leading up to the Olympics for lacking the staff to deal with backlogs of people and luggage, but Monday's crowds moved through without a hitch.

The exodus included thousands of athletes and Prime Minister David Cameron, who was heading on vacation to the Mediterranean.

Heathrow built a temporary Olympics terminal with 31 check-in desks to accommodate departing athletes and support staff. The terminal was decorated like a park, and some staff wore bearskin hats in the style of Buckingham Palace guards.

"I have to say to Britain, you guys did a great job," said passenger Tumua Anae, a 23-year-old Californian who won gold as part of the U.S. water polo team.

London's quirky mayor, Boris Johnson, gloated to reporters, saying London had defied the skeptics. Some 300,000 foreigners and 5.5 million day-trippers flocked to the city for the games. Hotel occupancy was at 84 percent ? double what Beijing and Sydney saw during their Olympics.

Johnson said the city's public transport had coped just fine. Use of London's subway ? the Tube ? was up 30 percent but saw few major problems. London's overground commuter train saw double the normal crowds, and the city's bike hire scheme broke a record with 46,000 bikes rented on a single day.

Traffic actually became heavier on Monday as motorists who had stayed away to avoid Olympic crowds returned to the streets. Taxi drivers breathed a sigh of relief after having complained of fewer customers and being barred from using special Olympic road lanes.

Security officials, too, could cheer the lack of any major incident during the games.

Britain has been a prime target of Islamic terror groups because of its support for the U.S.-led operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Dozens of plots, including the 2006 attempt to blow up trans-Atlantic airliners, have been hatched within Britain's sizeable Muslim population.

Upping the fear factor was an Olympic security contractor's admission just weeks before the games that it would have a shortfall of guards. In the end, the military had to provide 3,500 last-minute personnel, and contractor G4S expects to lose up to 50 million pounds ($78 million).

But while police made some 250 arrests, there were no attacks ? something officials attributed to years of planning and boosted intelligence resources.

"I'm very proud that we didn't have anything serious to deal with, but that was because of a lot of hard work done by a lot of people," said Olympics security coordinator Chris Allison.

In central London, workers using fork lifts, cherry pickers and small cranes began clearing a temporary 15,000-seat arena ? and scooping up 5,000 tons of sand ? from the site of the beach volleyball competition in Horseguards Parade, a storied square in the heart of London's Westminster political district.

A total of 17 Olympic venues around the country will eventually be dismantled. But some will remain for the upcoming Paralympics, which run from Aug. 29 to Sept. 9.

The Olympic Park, visited by more than 5 million people during the games, will be closed to the public until the Paralympics, and many venues will see changes to make them more accessible to the disabled before those games begin. Some 7,000 police officers and 5,000 G4S workers will be on hand to guard the Paralympics.

Until then, London can bask in the memories of an event when went very much as intended.

Carmelina Moscato, a member of the bronze-medal Canadian soccer team, said participating in the games was like "being in dreamland."

"I could not have asked for more," she said.
