Plants' fungi allies may not help store climate change's extra carbon

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Fungi found in plants may not be the answer to mitigating climate change by storing additional carbon in soils as some previously thought, according to an international team of plant biologists.

The researchers found that increased carbon dioxide stimulates the growth of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) -- a type of fungus that is often found in the roots of most land plants -- which then leads to higher decomposition rates of organic materials, said Lei Cheng, post doctorate fellow in plant science, Penn State. This decomposition releases more carbon dioxide back into the air, which means that terrestrial ecosystems may have limited capacity to halt climate change by cleaning up excessive greenhouse gases, according to the researchers.

"Prior to our study, there have been few studies on whether elevated levels of carbon dioxide would stimulate organic carbon decomposition through AMF," said Cheng.

To study the effect of higher levels of carbon dioxide on AMF-mediated decomposition, the researchers conducted four experiments, two in greenhouses and two in fields to mimic Earth's expected North American atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide. They studied plots of a wild oat species, which is native to Eurasia and now common in North American grasslands, and wheat.

In the experiments, one plot was treated with AMF, the other did not have the fungus. Both plots were exposed to higher than currently existing carbon dioxide levels. After a ten-week gestation period, the sample of plants with AMF had 9 percent less carbon in the soil than the plot that was not treated with AMF, indicating that the carbon was released back into the atmosphere.

"Basically, we showed that elevated carbon dioxide increases carbon allocation to AMF to increase plant nitrogen uptake, and higher AMF facilitate organic residue decomposition which releases carbon dioxide into the air," said Cheng.

Elevated levels of carbon dioxide did significantly increase the size of the AMF colonies and carbon allocation underground, according to the researchers, who released their findings in the Aug. 30 issue of Science. However, the storage of carbon is offset by the role of AMF in facilitating decomposition.

"We used to think that this excess carbon would be sequestered in the soil," said Cheng. "So, that could help mitigate climate change, but it doesn't appear to be so."

They also studied the effect on a wheat and soybean field. In this experiment, Cheng said elevated levels of carbon dioxide increased both the size of AMF colonies and decomposition.

AMF colonies, which are found in the roots of 80 percent of land plant species, play a critical role in Earth's carbon cycle. The fungus receives and stores carbon -- a byproduct of the plant's photosynthesis -- from its host plant in its long vein-like structures. A plant stores about 20 percent of its carbon in AMF, according to Cheng.

AMF also help the plant capture nutrients, such as phosphorus and nitrogen.

"We found that, under elevated carbon dioxide levels, AMF supply more nitrogen to their host plants by acquiring ammonium directly from decomposing residues," Cheng said. "So the good news is that AMF's role in the plant's nitrogen uptake may open up the possibility of keeping carbon in the soil."

When there are higher carbon dioxide levels, the plant's ability to take in nitrates is inhibited and it then adds more carbon to fungi like AMF to acquire ammonium, said Cheng. The management of soil nitrogen transformations may provide a promising strategy of restoring levels of carbon sequestration under higher carbon dioxide conditions.

Cheng worked with Fitzgerald L. Booker, plant physiologist and professor of crop science, and Kent O. Burkey, plant physiologist and professor of crop science and botany, both of North Carolina State University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service; Thomas W. Rufty, Bayer Distinguished Professor, department of crop science, Shuijin Hu, associate professor of plant pathology, H. David Shew, professor of plant pathology, and Cong Tu, research specialist, all of North Carolina State University, and Lishi Zhou, department of plant pathology, North Carolina State University and State Key Laboratory of Vegetation and Environmental Change, Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Science.

Elwick Ghost has major role to play in Netting Services Stayers - Bettor

Elwick Ghost has major role to play in Netting Services Stayers Trophy at Sunderland

Elwick Ghost will be a big runner, if he gets a clear passage in Nottingham?s Netting Services Stayers Trophy on Wednesday, August 29, 2012. The white dog is currently going through a bad spell, as he displayed nothing special on a few occasions lately.

However, the bettors should not ignore the luck factor. The prime reason behind Elwick Ghost?s trouncing was not his lack of pace, but the terrible situation he went through. On almost every occasion, he got crowded in the beginning and as a result, was in no position to make an impact.

The son of Timor Blue returned to Sunderland last week, when finishing fourth behind Aldworth Pebbles in a 640 metres contest. He made a decent start, but got badly crowded at the third bend.

His misery did not end right there, as another crowding embraced him at the fifth bend. After going through plenty of mess twice, it was impossible for him to secure a notable place on the chart.

No one can doubt Elwick Ghost?s racing skills, as he produces a positive result, whenever he gets a clean ride. So, the punters should think twice before looking elsewhere for the victor.

Other hounds in the crew are: Brunswick Jenny, Total Respect, Cals Runner, Border Lane and Highclere Drift. The ?300 meeting is due to get started at 21:14 GMT.

Total Respect is a powerful hound, but an embarrassing loss at Doncaster would have shaken her confidence terribly. The bitch is due to start from the fourth trap ? something she is doing after a long while. She was an easy winner on her sole exit from this box back in January.

Brunswick Jenny is expected to turn the screws in the final stages. Starting the race from the red box is a plus for the black bitch and despite a few recent defeats, she cannot be written off.

Cals Runner is running well these days, but in defeat. Highclere Drift needs to show significant improvement to fancy some chances. Border Lane is new to this class, and will be under pressure.

An exciting clash between Brunswick Jenny and Elwick Ghost is quite easy to predict. Any inside crowding will help the former take an early advantage. Good luck to all the hounds.

If your finances are in a shambles, your mental and emotional state are sure to follow. Use the tips below to better manage your personal finances.

Do not think of thrift shopping or second hand items as something for the needy. You can save money and find quality items such as clothing, furniture and books at any local thrift store. The array of rare and interesting goods available, particularly when it comes to clothing, is especially appealing to children and teens. Try shopping early during the day to see the most variety.

Should you get a credit card that offers rewards? If you always make your payments on time and pay the full balance, you may be the ideal candidate. Credit card rewards take several forms, including products, airline miles, and of course, cold hard cash. Look for a good percentage rate on your purchases and pick the card that offers the reward you like best.

Keep your eye on the market trends when planning your forex trades. It is very important to remain informed so that you can always buy low and sell high. Don?t sell in a swinging market of any kind. Be clear in what you want when you are not going all the way through a trend.

Make sure that you keep track of what you are spending your money on for a couple of weeks or even months to get a better understanding of your spending habits. Realizing what you spend the most on can help you decide which areas to cut back in.

If the whole family wants an expensive item, then ask each member to contribute to buying it because this will show kids the value of money and make them appreciate what they have. If everyone is likely to benefit from a particular purchase, there is no harm in soliciting money from others.

Compounding interest is something that all young people should be aware of, especially if they are trying to stay on top of their finances. Saving a portion of everything you earn. Squirrel it away in a savings vehicle of some kind.

Stay on top of your credit score. Many resources allow you to view your credit score free of charge. You should do this every six months to check your report for unauthorized changes or evidence of identity theft.

Use a wall calender to keep track of bills that are due and bill cycles. In doing so, you are going to make timely payments on everything, even when the paper statements are late or do not come in the mail. You will avoid late charges and see what you need to budget for the month at a single glance.

Too much credit can work against you and give you a bad personal credit history. If the credit card companies give you more credit than you really should have, your credit score will go down, and you will have to pay higher interest over time.

Use a few different checking or savings accounts to help improive your budgeting process. You can use a single account to pay fixed expenses and another for variable expenses. This helps you stay on top of all your expenditures, and maintain a better idea of what you spend your money on.

Take note of what you did to get into your financial mess in the first place. If you are trying to fix your credit and have spent considerable time doing so, let that be a beacon for you not to get in that kind of mess again. If you find yourself struggling financially, it might be time to get a new job or acquire some better financial management skills. When you are dealing with your personal finances, any mistake that has been made can be turned into a valuable learning experience. Look at your past and see where you have went wrong. It will better prepare you for the future and keep you from repeating your mistakes.

Although it can be tough to take care of personal finances, you really can get a handle on them and improve your situation. Making the right decisions is simply about talking to the right people. Get a handle on your finances with the helpful information you learned here.

Tips On How To Gain More Muscle : Premier Diet and Fitness

Posted by haleyjonas on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Are you tired all day? Are you lagging behind your counterparts? Are you fighting with weight issues? Adding a strength training routine to your workout program can solve all these problems, and this article describes that solution in depth.

TIP! Do not exceed 60 minutes, when working out. The body begins to produce more cortisol, a stress hormone, after sixty minutes of working out.

You should not emphasize speed over a good technique. Not only is it safer, but slowing down to assure that you use the correct form will give better outcomes than trying to do them faster. Stay focused, and be sure that you are properly performing the exercise.

TIP! You must consume a sufficient amount of protein if you are serious about building muscle mass. Protein is the basic element for building muscles.

You need to consume carbohydrates, if you hope to build your muscles. Carbs are the fuel that your body uses to power itself through exercise routines. People who engage in intensive daily workouts should eat 2 to 3 grams of carbohydrates per pound of weight. For example, if you weight 180 pounds, you need to eat 360 to 540 grams of carbohydrates a day.

TIP! When on a program to build muscle, remember the importance of carbohydrates. Carbs are vital because they will help you to get the energy that you need so that you can have a great weight training session.

Not all exercises should be done with larger weights. Some moves that can cause injury include neck work, split squats, and dips. Bigger exercises like, rows, deads, presses and squats are more appropriate for the heavier loads.

TIP! Use a combination of free weight exercises and well as weight machines for your muscle building sessions. Free weights are actually better at building bulk.

Enhance your muscle-building routine by stretching beforehand. There are two major benefits to your muscles by incorporating stretching into your routine. Stretching minimizes soreness, so you can get back into the gym faster. You can really open up your ranges of available motion with regular stretching, and this only assists your activities specifically focused on muscle growth.

TIP! Having only a few meals per day does not provide your muscles enough nutrients to stabilize your body and build muscle at the same time. The best diet to build muscle consists of eight meals a day, each with a healthy balance of fats, carbs, and protein.

When performing exercises to build muscle, perform the last set until you fail?that is, you cannot complete the exercise with proper form. Your exercise probably will not contribute to maximum muscle growth if you do not reach the point of failure on your last rep. When you reach a point of exhaustion, avoid injury by not forging ahead.

TIP! Remember to eat well when building muscle. Hydration is important in a lot of different health fields, and muscle building is no exception.

Try to make sure that you get enough protein in your day. You should try to get around 20-30 grams of protein at each meal. If you distribute your protein consumption throughout the day, it will be easier to reach your target intake. Spread your protein intake throughout your day for optimum energy.

TIP! Motivate yourself by rewarding yourself for each goal you achieve. Since gaining muscle involves a long-term commitment, it is important to stay motivated constantly.

You need to take in more calories when trying to grow muscle. You ideally want to consume what it takes to increase your weight by a weekly pound. Research healthy ways for you to add muscle mass, and if increased caloric intake does not improve your mass, then consider muscle building supplements.

TIP! Try to be realistic with your muscle-building goals. Remember that it takes time to really see results, and your efforts will be worth it in the long run.

Keep a record of body fat while working to build muscles. Tracking your weight won?t be much help as your muscle will be increasing as the fat decreases. You may be discouraged when you see your weight stay the same or go up, but just remind yourself that you are gaining muscle.

TIP! After you workout, stretch to help your muscles recover better. Anyone that is under forty years old needs to make sure that each stretch is held for a minimum of thirty seconds.

It is necessary to monitor your calories, if you want to build muscle. Be aware that there are good calories and bad calories; incorporate more good protein calories and eliminate bad fat calories. A bad diet makes you fat ? not muscular.

TIP! You should make sure that the number of calories you consume every day is high enough. Dependent on the quantity of extra muscle you are aiming for, an online calculator can assist you in determining how many extra calories you need to consume.

In virtually every case, your muscle-building routine should include the venerable ?big three? exercises. The ?big three? muscle building exercises are: bench presses, dead lifts and squats. These exercises not only add bulk to your muscles, but they improve your strength and condition your body as well. Vary these exercises regularly.

TIP! Muscle building does not mean that you need to get completely ripped. Different muscle building routines will sculpt your body in different ways.

Put together a bodybuilding program that is customized with your goals in mind. In this way, you can develop muscle mass and train your muscles to perform certain routines. As you keep progressing, additional exercises can be added or you could change an exercise if you become bored.

TIP! Always look for new ways to exercise your body and build muscle. Different exercises achieve different results; some are better for toning while others are better for bulk.

TIP! When trying to bulk up and add muscle mass, always eat breakfast first thing in the morning. Consume a high quality breakfast filled with protein and fiber to start the day properly.

Make sure you set real short-term goals. Although you would like to squat several hundred pounds in only a month, this is just not possible, and you are likely to injure yourself. After you determine your baseline strength, see to it that you reach for the best results in each routine. In many cases, you will find yourself stronger each day, surpassing your short-term goals. This will be encouraging and will keep you going.

TIP! If you are trying to build up muscle mass, be sure to get plenty of protein in your diet. Protein is a major building block of muscle, so not eating enough of it may actually lead to your losing muscle, which defeats the whole purpose behind bulking up.

Focus on the squat, the deadlift, and the bench press. Incorporating these three exercises to your routine are paramount to achieve a successful bodybuilding plan, and for many reasons. Each will build your strength, and therefore your muscle mass, while also improving muscle condition. Use these exercises during your workout.

TIP! Look for quality protein powders for use in energy drinks. A lot of people find it much easier to consume protein in forms like shakes as opposed to always eating things like eggs.

Even if you aren?t concerned about adding bulk to your body, it?s still beneficial to work out your muscles. It can boost your self-esteem, make you stronger, better your joints, and improve your lung function when you do light or medium cardio routines.

TIP! Eating or drinking protein before exercising is just as important as having it after workouts. Ingest at least 20 grams of high-quality whey protein right before you do a workout.

You must exercise great care when choosing how often to do your muscle building exercises. If you don?t stay motivated, you will not increase muscle tone or strength. However, if you overdo it, you risk injury. If you exercise or train too much, you may suffer an injury; you may also stretch your skin and leave lasting marks.

TIP! Use many different kinds of grips when doing back exercises. Perform deadlifts and rack pulls with a mixed or staged grip, in order to achieve more strength.

Creatine is a very popular supplement with muscle builders, but you need to use it with caution, especially if you are taking it for an extended time period. Check with your doctor and let him know about specific kidney problems you are having. There are other side effects from creatine, including heart arrhythmias and muscle disorders like cramping. Adolescents using this supplement are at the highest risk. Make certain that you are taking these supplements in their recommended safe quantities.

TIP! Supplements are not the only key to building muscle. Only about one-half of the nutrients in supplements will be absorbed by the body.

Increasing your muscle tone and mass will change your life in a myriad of ways. Getting stronger and fitter means higher energy levels, increased endurance and a more attractive body. It is an efficient and fun way to improve your overall health and conditioning, so put the useful advice of this article to work for you soon

TIP! Make sure you have enough vegetables in your diet. Often, vegetables are overlooked in a muscle building plan, in favor of the emphasis on proteins.

3 Active Mining and Energy Stocks to Watch | Resource Investing ...

Three Active Mining and Energy Stocks to WatchHere?s a look at three stocks ? one energy?and two mining ? that had some of last week?s highest trading volumes (or the most shares exchanged between buyers and sellers).

Oil?and?gas?producer?Raging River Exploration?(TSXV:RRX)?was the most actively-traded stock on the TSX Venture last Friday, with a volume of 2,252,419 and a small loss in stock price of 0.91 percent. It closed at C$2.18.

Last week, the five-month old Saskatchewan-based junior?reported?net earnings of $3.4 million on cash flow of $7.5 million. The company had netbacks of $48.11 per barrel of oil equivalent (boe) for the three months ending June 30.?It booked an average production of 1,711 boe/day (97 percent oil and liquids).

The company also announced that it upped its expectations for its 2012 fiscal year exit production to 2,300 boe/day, up from earlier estimates of 2,200 boe/day.

President and CEO Neil Roszell was?surprised?by the increased output, noting that initial productivity from the company?s Viking horizontal wells was stronger than expected. He believes the wells could continue to exceed initial projections.

New completion techniques and strategies that allowed the wells to produce at rates 50 to 70 percent higher than historical well productivity in the area were credited with producing the higher output.

These figures initially boosted the company?s stock price early last week as analysts had projected that production numbers and cash flow levels would be down as a result of lower oil prices and wet weather impacting production schedules.

Production at Viking was stimulated by an extraction method referred to as ?waterfloods,? which injects water to flush out residual oil in formations that are targeted by horizontal and vertical drilling rigs. Roszell acknowledged the impact that these hydraulic fracture stimulations have had for the company in recent months and will have leading forward.

GoldQuest Mining?(TSXV:GQC) was the second-most actively traded TSX Venture stock last week, gaining 8.92 percent to close at $1.71 after 1,973,443 trades were made.

Already doing well, the company continued to receive positive attention from the market after releasing strong assay results from its Romero property, located in the Dominican Republic, in late July.

Those assays added to other strong mineralization results released for the property earlier this summer, and indicate significant mineralization, including 258 meters grading 4.5 grams/tonne (g/t) gold and 1.3 percent copper as well as an upper section of 55 meters grading 1.25 g/t gold.

The company also announced that it will conduct further drilling of Romero once a larger drill rig can be brought in to assist the two currently in operation. The company hopes to build off of the mineralization at its nearby La Escandalosa property, which has a NI 43-101 inferred resource of 3.129 Mt at 3.14 g/t gold, or 316,000 ounces.

GoldQuest holds a 100 percent stake in eight Dominican properties and has been operating in the country since 2001. Its most advanced property to date is Las Animas, which holds an indicated 1 million tonnes of 2.64 g/t gold and is currently undergoing metallurgical testing.

The Dominican Republic is also home to one of the largest gold properties in the world, including the?25.3-million-ounce proven and probable Pueblo Viejo gold mine belonging to Barrick Gold (TSX:ABX,NYSE:ABX) and Goldcorp (TSX:G,NYSE:GG). It is set to?begin operations this year.

Finally, Aurcana (TSXV:AUN), a Canadian silver miner with operations in Texas and Mexico, was the fourth-most actively traded company at the end of week, with a volume of 1,882,107.

The company?s?Q2 report, which it released last week, fell in line with Wall Street analysts? projections, according to Thomson Reuters data. It posted a net income from mining operations of $3.4 million for the first six months of 2012. These figures represent a 50 percent increase from the same period in 2011 and were largely attributed to the expansion of the company?s Mexico-based La Negra silver mine.

The La Negra mine, an existing production site in operation between 1970 and 2000, witnessed a 32 percent increase in tonnes of ore processed during the second quarter of 2012 while producing 45 percent more silver ounces (373,037) during the same period.

The company also completed a second mill expansion at La Negra, boosting processing capacity to 2,500 tonnes per day. Drilling programs continue to delineate mineral bodies on Aurcana?s 99.9 percent-owned property.

Aurcana?s Texas-based Shafter project boasts a silver resource of 24.6 million measured and indicated?ounces and 22.8 million ounces inferred. The mine is expected to recover 3.9 million ounces of silver in its first year of production.

Shares in the company closed Friday at 93 cents, up 8.14 percent.

Michel Bourez and Alejo Muniz advance to Round 3 at Billabong Pro Tahiti

Tahiti?s Michel Bourez and Brazil?s Alejo Muniz advanced to Round 3 at Billabong Pro Tahiti, the fifth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, after claiming top honours in their respective Round 2 heats that went down at Teahupo?o in Taiarapu, Tahiti, on Friday, August 17.

Bourez got the better of America?s Patrick Gudauskas in the fifth heat to successfully move into the next round of the competition while brining the event to a premature end for his rival.

The sixth heat saw Brazil?s Jadson Andre succumb to his fellow countryperson Muniz, consequently getting eliminated from the competition while sending the latter into the next round of the competition.

The three-to-four foot shifty waves on offer at the primary event site promised a heavy dose of enthralling action as the world renowned surfers continued to take each other on to extend their life in the competition. Day 2 of the latest ASP World Tour event featured the battles between surfers who had failed to make much of an impact during their Round 1 heats and thus were fighting for survival.

The fifth heat pitted Bourez against Gudauskas in a man-on-man battle for the Round 3 spot. With heavy pressure hanging over their heads, both the surfers were fully aware of the fact that they were little to no room for an error during their heat.

As the battle got underway, Bourez got off to a promising start and continued to build momentum throughout the course of the heat to eventually register a heat-total of 12.33 points.

Gudauskas struggled to find his rhythm throughout the entirety of the battle and eventually finished with a two-wave total of 3.40 points, consequently conceding victory to his rival.

The sixth heat saw Muniz and Andre take each other on, determined to clinch the win to extend their life in the competition.

The Brazilian surfer opened his account with a 5.67-point ride and went on to back it up with a 6.33-point wave, thus finishing with a two-wave total of 12.00 points.

Andre responded with a couple of scores in the four-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 8.97 points, thus getting eliminated from the competition.

Gulf oil well costs up 10 percent, ConocoPhillips exec says

Gulf of Mexico well costs are up 10 percent, said Executive Vice President of exploration and production at ConocoPhillips Matt Fox said at an event Aug. 22, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Stiffer regulations have increased well costs by about 10 percent as drilling activity levels reach highs not seen since the massive oil spill in 2010, a ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) executive said at a seasonal event that serves traders and oil prospects on Aug. 22.

Executive Vice President Matt Fox said time spent testing blowout preventers, the emergency equipment used for out-of-control wells, to meet government mandates is the primary cause of these rising costs, the Houston Chronicle reports.

?The industry as a whole is experiencing a lot of flat time on BOP testing,? said Fox, at the North American Prospect Expo, or NAPE, at the George Brown Convention Center in Downtown Houston. ?It?s a teething problem as we get through some of the newer regulations. It?s a phase.?

ConocoPhillips recently became the nation?s largest independent oil and natural gas exploration and production company after Phillips 66, its refining arm, spun off into a separate company, the Chronicle reports.

Fox is the company?s executive vice president of exploration and production.
