Reindeer at risk from snow sport

Wild reindeer may face a new threat from the extreme sport of snow-kiting, a study has found.

Scientists modelled reindeer's fright responses to both snow-kiting and skiing in an alpine area of south Norway.

They found that reindeer were more afraid of snow-kiters because of the airborne kite.

The study recommends that controls are put on the sport to prevent harm to wild reindeer.

Snow-kiting is a new sport, similar to kite-surfing, in which the rider wears skis and is pulled along by a kite.

It is thought to be one of the fastest-growing recreational sports in Norway.

Amid growing concern among wildlife managers and politicians the study, which is published in the journal of Applied Animal Behaviour Science, assessed the potential effect of this activity on wild reindeer in the alpine area of Norefjell-Reinsj?fjell.

Scientists conducted experiments in which the reindeer were confronted by an approaching skier or snow-kiter.

They gathered data on the animals' reactions, such as distance from the skier or snow-kiter when the reindeer fled, how far they ran and how long the fright response lasted.

Using this information, the scientists were able to predict the likely effects of an increasing number of skiers and snow-kiters on the reindeer population.

They found that habitat and feeding time would decrease by up to 7.5% if the number of skiers reached 105. At that point, the reindeer would seek refuge away from the ski trails.

But in the case of snow-kiters, that reduction could be as high as 100% if the number of snow-kiters reached 241 travelling at 8.8km per hour, or 111 snow-kiters travelling at 20km per hour.

In addition, scientists observed that the size and airborne nature of the kite "was more frightening for the reindeer" than the presence of a skier.

Long fright responses by reindeer towards snow-kiters mean the sport could have "very negative population consequences" on the animals, according to the study.

Because of the greater range of a snow-kiter, as well as the kite's visibility over long distances, interactions with reindeer populations may also be more frequent for snow-kiting than for other alpine sports.

The research also recommended that ski trails are carefully planned and managed to minimise the combined effect of the two sports on reindeer.

There are currently no restrictions on the use of snow-kites in Norway.

China files trade case against Washington

BEIJING (AP) ? China filed a World Trade Organization case Monday challenging U.S. anti-dumping measures on billions of dollars of kitchen appliances, paper and other goods, adding to worsening trade strains as global demand weakens.

Beijing's move came shortly before the Obama administration filed its own WTO case accusing China of improperly subsidizing exports of automobiles and auto parts.

China and the U.S. have clashed over complaints about market barriers and subsidies for goods including autos, solar panels, tires, steel and chicken. Political pressures on both sides are worsening as demand for their goods cools, raising the threat of job losses in export industries.

As campaigning for the U.S. presidency intensifies ahead of a November vote, President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney have traded barbs on China, accusing each other of backing policies that would move American jobs overseas.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said its latest WTO complaint centers on the U.S. Congress's passage of a law this year that retroactively gave the Commerce Department power to impose anti-dumping duties on Chinese goods. That came after a U.S. court reversed earlier duties imposed under rules covering countries such as China and Vietnam that are deemed to be "non-market economies."

"This practice puts Chinese enterprises in an uncertain legal environment, in violation of the relevant rules of the WTO transparency and due process," ministry spokesman Shen Danyang said in a statement.

The ministry said U.S. measures being challenged cover 24 types of products worth $7.2 billion. It gave no details, but a statement from the WTO in Geneva said they include paper, steel, tires, magnets, chemicals, kitchen appliances, wood flooring and wind towers.

The Chinese filing Monday requests consultations to settle the dispute, the first stage in a WTO complaint. If no resolution is found after 60 days, Beijing can ask for the case to be handed over to a WTO panel for judgment. Depending on the outcome, China might be allowed to request sanctions.

The two governments, along with other members of the Group of 20 major rich and emerging economies, have pledged to avoid taking steps that might hamper trade and global growth. Despite that, they have traded accusations they are improperly subsidizing a range of industries or shielding them from foreign competition in violation of WTO commitments.

In July, Washington filed a WTO case challenging anti-subsidy tariffs imposed by Beijing on imports of American automobiles. Chinese authorities imposed the charges after concluding the financial rescue of General Motors Co. and Chrysler LLC violated rules against subsidies.

Among other complaints, the United States, the European Union and Japan are challenging China's controls on exports of rare earths needed by manufacturers of mobile phones and other high-tech products. Washington also is investigating complaints that Beijing is improperly subsidizing its producers of solar panels, wiping out American jobs.

The latest clashes come as global economic growth appears to be turning down due to Europe's debt crisis and a sluggish U.S. recovery despite repeated stimulus measures.

The Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said last week its latest economic indicators "point to a continued loss of momentum in most major economies" including the United States, the euro zone, Canada and Britain.

(AP) ? Alex Smith had rallied his team for a late victory against the Lions last fall at Ford Field, and had no intention of cutting it close this time on his home turf.

Eleven months later Smith and his Niners were dominant with the football world watching.

Smith threw touchdown passes of 21 and 23 yards to tight end Vernon Davis, the defense shut down a prolific passer for the second time in as many weeks, and the San Francisco 49ers beat Detroit 27-19 Sunday night in a September showdown of NFC powers that hardly lived up to its hype.

The Lions didn't do their part.

"It's another win, obviously on a big stage, Sunday night against a really good opponent, playoff team last year," Smith said. "The game came down to the wire last season at their place. So, now we have them at our place and we wanted to set the tone early."

San Francisco stymied 2011 NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers in Week 1, then record-setting Matthew Stafford in Week 2.

This stingy, opportunistic defense denied Stafford another milestone and again is making its mark as one of the league's elite units by shutting down the top offenses and most prolific passers.

Smith completed 20 of 31 throws for 226 yards and extended his franchise-record streak of passes without an interception to 216. He led the reigning NFC West champion Niners (2-0) to their ninth straight win in the series since the Lions' last victory on Sept. 25, 1995. Smith took a hard hand to the helmet from John Wendling late and bloodied his nose, then found Davis again.

"He's as tough as a $2 steak," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "I grew up eating a lot of them. I know what I'm talking about."

The 49ers ran their home winning streak against the Lions to 12 games since Detroit's last victory at Candlestick Park on Nov. 2, 1975.

And no heated greeting after this one. Harbaugh and Lions coach Jim Schwartz met each other with a friendly hello and handshake during pregame warm-ups, then an uneventful shake and half-hug when time expired.

"I thought it went good," Harbaugh said.

Gore carried 17 times for 89 yards and a 1-yard touchdown, just missing his second 100-yard game this year and fourth in the series.

Calvin Johnson caught eight passes for 94 yards, but that was hardly enough as the Lions (1-1) didn't get closer than the 20 until their final drive on a cool, windy night by the bay. San Francisco's secondary kept Megatron from catching a touchdown pass for the second straight matchup, forcing Stafford to rely heavily on the running game.

Another impressive outing by a defense that shut down Rodgers in a 30-22 win over the Packers last week at Lambeau Field.

"That's our 'D,'" tight end Delanie Walker said. "They're some dogs."

Stafford finished 19 for 32 with 230 yards, one touchdown and an interception, missing a chance to become the first player in NFL history to throw for 350 yards in five straight games. Drew Brees of the Saints surpassed 350 yards passing in four consecutive games last season.

Stafford threw for 355 yards in last week's 27-23 win over St. Louis at home, but also had three interceptions before halftime for the first time ? and said he couldn't do that again for the Lions to win. He never got in sync.

"We didn't do a good enough job in anything," Schwartz said. "Whether it was the run game, the pass game, defense, special teams. We need to play better in all phases. We left a lot of opportunities on the field."

The 49ers dominated on both sides of the ball 11 months to the day after a 25-19 comeback win on the road handed Detroit its first defeat following a 5-0 start. It ended with excitable Harbaugh's firm handshake and backslap that ignited Schwartz ? and they had to be separated leaving the field.

There were some hot tempers Sunday, too. After Davis and Walker drove Cliff Avril to the sideline while blocking on a running play, Avril kicked Walker in the helmet and poked Davis in the eye ? though Walker didn't feel like it was intentional. Lions right tackle Gosder Cherilus and 49ers cornerback Tarell Brown pushed and shoved after a big hit by Patrick Willis on Johnson in the first quarter.

Smith exploited Detroit's depleted, frustrated secondary at every opportunity. On his TD, Davis easily beat Wendling, starting while regular safety Louis Delmas recovers from knee surgery.

Smith hit Michael Crabtree on the left sideline for a 17-yard gain, then Davis scored on the next play. The Lions were without rookie cornerback Bill Bentley because of a concussion he sustained last week and cornerback Chris Houston with an ankle injury.

David Akers kicked field goals from 36 and 48 yards for San Francisco a week after connecting from 63 yards to tie an NFL record.

Jason Hanson finished with field goals of 38, 41, 40 and 48 yards. He also missed one off the right upright on a 40-yard attempt late in the second quarter. The Lions scored their lone touchdown on Stafford's 9-yard TD pass to Brandon Pettigrew with 1:29 remaining.

"I don't think as an offense we've hit our stride yet," Stafford said. "We moved the ball really well at times today against a really good defense, and we didn't take advantage of our opportunities in the red zone like we need to."

The 49ers ended their streak of 26 quarters spanning six straight regular-season games without a turnover, and 36 consecutive quarters without a lost fumble since Davis lost one Nov. 6 last year at Washington. San Francisco was trying to match the 2010 Patriots for the NFL record of seven games without a turnover.

After Hanson's first field goal, Kendall Hunter fumbled the kickoff return after being stripped by Tahir Whitehead and Kassim Osgood recovered. It marked the first career lost fumble in 18 games for the second-year halfback.

But Ahmad Brooks batted down a pass on third down in the ensuing series as the Lions had to settle for another field goal.

San Francisco's defense delivered again on Detroit's next series. On third-and-6 from the 20, Stafford threw down the middle of the field with nobody even close and safety Dashon Goldson jumped in for an interception.

"Two playoff teams, back to back, and we came back out here tonight and did it again," running back Frank Gore said. "We came out here and started the game fast, and then we finished it."

More topless pictures of Kate Middleton have been published in Silvio Berlusconi?s Chi tabloid magazine, despite legal action from the Royal family and the court case in France against Closer magazine which was the first to publish the photos.

?The magazine fulfilled its promise to publish an extensive photo report featuring 18 photographs of the Royal couple taken with a telephoto lens while the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were on vacation in the south of France.

Chi?s, Alfonso Signorini seems unconcerned with the Royal family?s threats and wrote on his Tweeter page that "not even a direct call from the Queen" would stop him from publishing the photographs. "If I had had more scandalous photos I would have willingly published them," Signorini told Italy's Corriere della Sera.

The French Closer magazine also owned by Berlusconi's publishing house Mondadori printed 14 pictures of the same series, causing outrage in the Royal Family. According to The Sun newspaper, the paparazzi series contains around 200 photos all in all.

The couple?s lawyers have started legal action against the French Closer magazine, and intend to prevent further publication of the photos in other media. They are now seeking an injunction and damages from the publisher.

The images were also published by Irish tabloid the Daily Star.

?It is the first airing and we will be seeking an injunction from them using the pictures, and it will lead to a longer court case where damages will be sought,?
a spokesman for St James?s Palace said.

The Royal couple?s lawyers are also prepared to file a criminal complaint against the unknown photographer or photographers over breach of privacy.

China to try ex-police head for defection, bribery

BEIJING (AP) ? A trial next week for a flamboyant former police chief marks the latest step by China's leadership to contain the fallout from a messy political scandal that disgraced a senior politician and complicated an unexpectedly bumpy handover of power to new leaders.

The Intermediate Court in the Chengdu announced Friday that Wang Lijun would stand trial Tuesday for defection, bribery and other charges. A police chief who was unusually fond of publicity, Wang was a longtime aide to prominent up-and-coming leader Bo Xilai. Wang's unexpected flight to the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu in February set off the scandal that led to Bo being suspended from the Communist Party Politburo and his wife being convicted last month of murdering a British businessman.

Dealing with the fates of Wang, Bo and his wife has consumed the leadership's attention when it had hoped to concentrate on preparing for a handover of power to a younger generation of leaders at the party congress this fall ? an event that always occasions tricky backroom politicking.

Though no dates have been announced, the congress is widely expected to be in the latter half of October. But the scheduling seemed to suffer another complication when the next top leader, Vice President Xi Jinping, suddenly dropped from public view this month and remained unaccounted for Friday for the 13th day. The government has refused to comment.

Xi's absence has reportedly prevented senior leaders from holding a Politburo meeting that will set the dates for the congress and confirm the agenda for a larger meeting that will announce the party's verdict on Bo, once the popular head of the inland city of Chongqing and a contender for a leadership spot.

With so much unsettled, the leadership appears determined to characterize Wang's case as one of individual wrongdoing rather than symptomatic of divisive infighting within the party.

"They would certainly keep this as an individual case with no implications for Bo Xilai and therefore no implications for party factional struggles and so on," said Joseph Cheng, a political science professor at the City University of Hong Kong.

Wang worked with Bo, first in a northeastern province and in Chongqing where Bo made Wang police chief. The two staged a crackdown on organized crime that grabbed headlines and made them both national figures but that later was criticized for trampling on civil liberties.

For still unexplained reasons, the two men had a falling out early this this year, and after Bo removed him as police chief, Wang fled to the U.S. Consulate in nearby Chengdu.

During a 33-hour stay, Wang told U.S. diplomats that he suspected that British businessman Neil Heywood, a business associate of the Bo family, had been murdered in November in Chongqing and that he had evidence to prove it. Though it's unclear if Wang sought asylum, his indictment charges him with doing so. But U.S. diplomats explained to him that under U.S. policy, American embassies and consulates may not grant asylum.

In the meantime, Bo had sent a phalanx of officials to surround the consulate and retrieve Wang. Wang only left the consulate after negotiating his own handover to a vice minister of state security who came from Beijing to retrieve him.

U.S. diplomats informed the British government about Wang's allegations, prompting London to request a new investigation and forcing the Chinese leadership to dealing publicly with affairs it usually prefers to handle in secret.

At her trial last month, Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, was given a suspended death sentence for murdering Heywood over business disputes in which the Briton allegedly threatened her son. Three leading Chongqing police officers and a Bo family aide were also sentenced as accomplices in the murder and subsequent cover-up.

Wang has been charged with defection, bribe-taking, "bending the law for selfish ends" and abuse of power. In announcing his indictment last week, the official Xinhua News Agency said Wang knew that Gu was under serious suspicion of murdering Heywood, but "consciously neglected his duty and bent the law for personal gain" so Gu would not be held responsible.

Wang's hearing is supposed to be open, but as with Gu's trial it is likely to be closely orchestrated, with selected participants and media access restricted to only the main government news outlets.

"The Chongqing incident is being settled politically," said Pu Zhiqiang, a prominent rights lawyer. "All the trials are fake judgments that are have been made with political intervention."

Bo was not mentioned in official versions of Gu's trial or Wang's indictment. Some political analysts say those omissions are signs that Bo ? who as a son of a revolutionary veteran is believed to retain some influence ? will be spared a criminal prosecution.

Cheng, the analyst in Hong Kong, said he believed internal leadership negotiations have resulted in a decision in which Bo will give up his political ambitions for a more lenient penalty over the scandal.

"It's a kind of bargaining within the leadership concerning the leadership succession process," Cheng said. "He's out, but he will get off very lightly."

Specialty Retail: How Real Is Brands? Twitter Reach?

?

In all of our reports, social media serves as one of the four primary components of the Digital IQ Index? research methodology. In addition to site, digital marketing and mobile, social media ? which takes into account community size, engagement, geo-localized content, and hundreds of other data points on both established and emerging platforms ? plays a significant role in how we determine overall digital competence. In other words, to earn a Genius or Gifted ranking in one of our studies, a brand must do all of social media and do it all?well.

?

What social media success looks like, however, isn?t always obvious. With so many newer platforms gaining influence in nuanced ways (and others, like Facebook, slipping in stature), not to mention authoritative voices arguing against traditional metrics (e.g., number of ?likes?, number of Twitter followers) as the most important measures, determining who the digital geniuses are requires more sophisticated investigation. In our Digital IQ Index?: Specialty Retail study, released last week, we made use of a new tool from Status People that, with some significant limitations, helps discern between fake and inactive Twitter followers and real, engaged followers. Using a tool like this one allows us to now look at brands ranked by their overall number of followers (as we?ve always done in the past), as well as calculate a modified ranking that shows a more ?real? representation of the size of these Twitter communities.

?

To illustrate how different these two analyses can turn out, look below at the 10 largest specialty retailers? Twitter communities before using the Status People tool:

?

And then after:

?

?

Using Status People, we were able to determine that, on average, 18 percent of the study?s 76 retailers? followers are fake. Because this tool has limited accuracy with accounts as large as those analyzed in the report, we cannot fully rely on these results. However, even in its limited capacity, it is staggering that a brand like Victoria?s Secret, which experienced 566 percent growth in its Twitter community between 2011 and 2012, could have a 25 percent fake and 39 percent inactive following. Inactive Tweeters, Twitter reps were quick to point out last week amidst a flood of media on the subject, should not be treated the same as their fake counterparts. Plenty of real people ? real consumers who buy the brands they follow ? use Twitter solely for its input, not for output; to discount their influence in the brand?s community would be misleading.

?

This is true, but all it takes is one quick glance at any Twitter account out there, be it a brand?s or a celebrity?s or a regular person?s, and the sheer number of bots in the ?follower? section lends credence to the point that Status People?s tool tries to make: you can?t take all numbers at face value.
