Shannon Miller pregnant after ovarian cancer treatment with second child

shannon-miller-pregnant.jpg

One Olympic champion just announced some great news: Gymnast Shannon Miller is pregnant. This is Miller's second child, though the first since she was diagnosed with germ cell ovarian cancer in 2011.

Miller decided to get the baseball-sized malignant tumor and one of her ovaries removed after her diagnosis, and got a clean bill of health on September 2011. Now she and husband John Falconetti have revealed they are expecting a newborn in summer 2013. The big reveal was made on Miller's personal website, and the gold medalist says she feels excited about welcoming a new life into her family.

"I've been blessed to have the opportunity to do some amazing things in my life, but being a mom is second to none," she says in a statement.

In the release about the pregnancy, Miller reveals that she and her husband had been hoping for a second child when they found out about her cancer. One of the risks of having chemotherapy was that Miller wouldn't be able to conceive again. Her first son with Falconetti, Rocco, is three years old.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 rival from Philips to sport dual SIM capabilities

Search our database using Google:

Posted on January 13, 2013, New York local time, news published under Android. Article by: Kevin Go.

Philips unveils its ?Samsung Galaxy Note 2,? the?Philips W8355 with dual-SIM feature. In short, it can tap AT&T and T-Mobile simultaneously.

Well, that?s if we?re going to base solely on display size ? not everything else?

The Philips W8355 is not what you will be able to call a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 killer nor is it an Xperia Z competitor since ? despite the gigantic screen ? it is mean to be a ?budget? smartphone so the proper contender to the Dutch phablet is the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Grand i9082. Users will most likely notice the W8355?s pixelated display right away since the qHD 540 x 960 resolution is definitely not a stunner but it is slightly better than the Galaxy Grand?s 5-inch 540 x 800.

When it comes to internal hardware, the W8355 has an impressive 512 megs of RAM (pun intended) paired with a 1 gigahertz dual-core processor that?s meant to keep the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system ticking happily. The Galaxy Grand has a slightly faster 1.2 gigahertz engine alongside twice the amount of RAM that the W8355 does [1 gigabyte], the Grand also features the slightly new-er Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean OS so that?s a little something to keep in mind.

Philips W8355

Philips to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, to offer the W8355 with dual-sim feature.

When it comes to taking photos, it sports a decent camera shooter. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 offers an 8-megapixel iPhone 4S-like camera. Philip?s W8355?s 5 megapixel main snapper isn?t likely to produce stunning Instagram photos but the phone?s dual SIM capabilities should make up for its utter lack of picture-taking prowess but the W8355 is not meant to impress anyone, the phone is made for those who want an Android smartphone with a sizable display real estate without having to spend too much, the dual-core processor and GPU surely won?t suffer thanks to the low resolution screen which means things will run smoothly and ? despite the lack of pixels ? YouTube videos will be a joy to watch on it.

Thing is, several tech new sites have all reported that the Philips W8355 will be offered exclusively in China, the fact that it can accommodate two SIM cards at the same time only made this news more significant so this can?only mean that Chinese users will have to settle with Todou.com instead of YouTube.

Sony Patents New Move Designed to Break Your Neck

It seems Sony filed a patent in September for some new Move technology that, by the looks of it, simply screams?bad idea, guys.

The patent, which can be downloaded in PDF form from Free Patents Online, describes motion capture similar to how Move functions now?by two-dimensionally tracking the light-emitting diodes?as well as ?another operation for capturing sound data emitted by the controller,? which?allows for three-dimensional tracking.

Insert Batman joke here.

The patent also shows how the controller?s face plate can be swapped out and how two of these controllers can be connected side-by-side or by their handles, making them into a double-bladed double-orbed controller (seen below).

Tech world saddened by death of Internet activist Aaron Swartz

NEW YORK (AP) ? Authorities say a co-founder of Reddit and activist who fought to make online content free to the public has been found dead.

A spokeswoman for New York's medical examiner says 26-year-old Aaron Swartz hanged himself in his Brooklyn apartment and was found Friday.

Swartz was a prodigy who as a young teenager helped create RSS. He co-founded the social news website Reddit and directed the political action group Demand Progress that campaigns against Internet censorship.

In 2011, he was arrested in Boston and charged with stealing millions of scientific journals from a computer archive at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Swartz pleaded not guilty. His federal trial on computer fraud charges was to begin next month. If convicted, he could have faced decades in prison and a fortune in fines.

Cannot use USB 2.0 device in Front Panel USB 3.0 port after Windows Update

Hi,
Motherboard: Asus P8Z77I Deluxe

When I install my old Win 7 Pro OEM disk and then install drivers off the Asus cd, my front panel USB 3.0 ports work great with both USB 2.0 & 3.0 devices.

After installing several updates including SP1 USB 2.0 devices are no longer recognized but 3.0 is fine. I then installed the latest drivers I could find but no joy. Any help here?

Thanks,
CxP

2013 Sony Open: First Tee grad Scott Langley leads at Waialae

Scott Langley had a heck of an introduction to the big leagues. Not only did the lefty play his first game as a member of the PGA Tour on Thursday, but he fired a flawless opening-round 8-under 62 Friday to take an early one-shot lead over a field that includes last week?s winner Dustin Johnson, U.S. Open champ Webb Simpson, and a slew of other decorated tour veterans.

Langley, the first graduate of The First Tee program to earn a tour card, posted six birdies and an eagle to steal the show from playing partner and fellow rookie Russell Henley, who will start Friday?s second round a shot back.

Langley heads up a class of 23 tour first-timers playing in the first full-field event of the 2013 season. He?s finished tied for low amateur at a U.S. Open (2010) and won on the Nationwide Tour as an amateur and twice last year as a pro. An accomplishment he may be proudest of, however, is his standing as the first alumnus of The First Tee program to earn a tour card.

?It's an honor to represent them, and I think it's really cool that the First Tee is getting a presence out on tour,? Langley told reporters Wednesday. ?It's a great organization, and it taught me a lot when I was younger.?

A program dedicated to teaching juniors core values through golf since its inception in 1997, The First Tee is a project of the PGA and LPGA Tours, the PGA of America, and the USGA, among other backers. More than 6.5 young people have participated in the activities of the organization, which boasts 10,000 active volunteers, 5,100 elementary schools, and offerings in all 50 states plus four international locations.

Langley, a University of Illinois All-American golfer, finished tied for 17th at Q-school. Last year at this time, he and good pal Henley were grinding it out on the Hooter?s Tour and he could barely contain his excitement to be playing in paradise.

"He had just missed the cut, I barely made the cut, we were on the range trying to help each other find it," Langley said. "We were just walking up 16. You could see the ocean behind, PGA Tour signs everywhere. We looked at each other and realized this is pretty cool, to look back one year ago and to know that we weren't here. We were in a far different place."

Langley, who credited Henley and a couple of other close friends with helping him through some lean times, looks up to Rickie Fowler as something of a mentor. Fowler took Langley under his wing last year and even provided housing for him and two other newbies in the field this week, Morgan Hoffman, and Cameron Tringale.

?Rickie was great. Kid has a heart of gold,? said the youngster about the popular golfer one year his senior. ?He became one of my closest friends living in Jupiter, kind of going through a tough time personally and he really helped me out with staying at his house.

?Morgan Hoffman and Cam Tringale and Rickie are some of my closest friends to this day, and in large part to me living there with those guys,? Langley said. ?Last year, I can really point to some areas in my golf game that were really improved just by being around Rickie and being around Cam and Morgan. They?re such competitors, and there?s so much good confidence, the right kind of confidence, and I really fed off that living in the house."

Langley may have been wide-eyed in his professional debut, but the 23-year-old exhibited wisdom beyond his years when he observed that he was far from hoisting the hardware.

"I'm a young guy, but I'm old enough to know that we have a lot of golf left,? he said. ?We've barely started, and I'm excited about the next few days.?

Guardians of the Galaxy to Shoot This Summer in London

Guardians of the Galaxy will shoot in London this summer

With Marvel Studios' Thor: The Dark World wrapping up production, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is next in line, followed by Guardians of the Galaxy. Today, we have word that Guardians of the Galaxy will begin production this summer in the U.K.

The studio's Phase II ensemble will be shot at Shepperton Studios in London, which is where a bulk of Thor: The Dark World was shot. Other upcoming movies such as Maleficent and Jack Ryan have shot in the London studio, with The Muppets 2 slated to start production there later this year.

James Gunn is directing from his own screenplay. Nicole Perlman wrote the original draft. The production is currently focusing on casting, with a number of actors up for the Peter Quill (a.k.a. Star-Lord) role. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zachary Levi, and Jim Sturgess have all read for the part, but no announcement has been made yet. The story follows Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Rocket Raccoon and Gamora as they dispense justice throughout the galaxy.

Guardians of the Galaxy comes to theaters August 1st, 2014. The film is directed by James Gunn.

5 IPOs On Deck Next Week: Cruise Ships And Energy LPs

The IPO calendar is starting the New Year much like it ended the last one: with a lot of energy companies and financial vehicles.

The one exception to the pattern is Norwegian Cruise Line, the third-largest cruise-ship operator in North America behind Carnival (CCL) and Royal Caribbean (RCL). The company was co-founded by a Norwegian in 1966 but is based in Florida, and most of its shares are now owned by Star Cruises owner Genting Hong Kong and private equity group Apollo Global Management (APO).

The cruise line's last five years of financials show slow but steady revenue growth and profitability, with only the recessionary year of 2008 recording an operating loss. In the nine months ended Sept. 30, revenue rose 2.4% from the year-earlier period, to $1.77 billion, while net income rose 30% to $167 million. The company is more than $2 billion in debt, however, and most of the roughly $400 million in proceeds will go toward paying its creditors and shareholders.

The firm plans to price on Jan. 17 at $16 to $18 a share, under the ticker NCLH.

Meanwhile, telecom provider Cincinnati Bell (CBB) is planning to spin off its data centers in the form of a REIT called CyrusOne. The REIT structure has gained renewed popularity in this field lately, with cellphone tower operators American Tower (AMT) converting to it a year ago and SBA Communications (SBAC) working on such a switch. CyrusOne will own some 23 data centers in the South and Midwest, drawing about $85 million in annual rent. The company plans to raise about $280 million under the ticker CONE.

As IBD recently reported, energy IPOs were popular last quarter, so it's not surprising that they make up the rest of this week's list. Coal producer SunCoke Energy (SXC), which went public in July 2011, is planning an encore with its LP affiliate SunCoke Energy Partners, which will own an interest in two cokemaking facilities in Ohio. It expects to raise $270 million under the ticker SXCP. Investors might also get a sense of deja vu when CVR Refining LP starts trading as CVRR. Its parent, oil refiner CVR Energy (CVI), went public in 2007, and in 2011 it successfully spun off its nitrogen fertilizer business as CVR Partners (UAN).

A new face will be USA Compression Partners, a Texas-based provider of natural-gas compression services. It will also go public in LP form with its general partner remaining private. It plans to raise $200 million and trade as USAC.
