What the devil? Royal Opera stages Meyerbeer rarity

LONDON (Reuters) - The audience at London's Royal Opera House is in for a big surprise on Thursday night.

They will witness German composer Giacomo Meyerbeer's 1831 grand opera "Robert le Diable" (Robert the Devil), a work so rarely performed that virtually no one has seen it, let alone sung it or played it.

In fact, the last time Britain's prestigious Royal Opera House put on the epic work was in 1890, by which time it had fallen out of favor, never to recover fully.

"I think the piece still works today," said Laurent Pelly, the French director with the Herculean task of staging a work that turned Meyerbeer into a superstar when it premiered in Paris nearly two centuries ago.

"I hope they will be taken by the story and the music and the singers," he told Reuters backstage on the eve of opening night. "It's a huge piece."

The chorus is 80-strong, there are 10 dancers, and the principal singers face roles among the most demanding in opera.

Adding to the stress was a last-minute casting change for the key role of Isabelle, which was to have been performed by American soprano Jennifer Rowley in her Royal Opera debut until she was replaced less than a week before the premiere.

"It was a musical problem," Pelly explained. "We were doing five weeks and in the end it was not possible to do, so it was very important to find somebody else," he added, speaking in English.

Italian Patrizia Ciofi was brought in with the advantage that she had worked with Pelly before and, crucially, was one of the few sopranos who had previously performed Robert le Diable.

"Three days is very short of course, but I know Patrizia," Pelly said.

Ciofi will sing the first four performances (December 6, 9, 12 and 15) and Russian soprano Sofia Fomina will take over for the final two shows on December 18 and 21.

PARIS TRIUMPH

When Meyerbeer started work on Robert le Diable, he set out to create a hit. Pelly likens the opera to a Hollywood blockbuster, light on subtlety but rich in action, special effects, stirring music and melodrama.

Set in the times of knights, jousting and chivalry, the story follows Robert's quest for the hand of Isabelle and his dangerous dance with the devil, and contains the once notorious scene of nuns' ghosts dancing provocatively by their tombs.

The effect on audiences in 1831 was sensational. They fell in love with the opera, which quickly became a favorite around the world and was deemed a masterpiece by Frederic Chopin.

Degas captured it in paint and, according to Pelly, its influences can be traced to popular works by composers including Bizet, Offenbach and Gounod.

Why it had fallen from grace by the 20th century is not clear.

"During the 19th century a lot of composers were inspired by Robert le Diable and by Meyerbeer, and 60 or 70 years after it seemed very old fashioned, there were too many performances and everybody knew it," said Pelly.

"I think the opera-goer wanted to forget it."

Other factors included the expense of staging such a large work, the emerging talents of Wagner and Verdi and its running time of over four hours. Except for Sunday's matinee, there are, unusually, plenty of tickets left on the Royal Opera website.

Some experts link its decline to Wagner, who was heavily influenced by Meyerbeer early on but turned on the composer and sought to disassociate himself from him.

Harvard recognizes group promoting safe kinky sex

(AP) ? Kinky sex has been admitted to Harvard.

The nation's oldest university has formally recognized Harvard College Munch, a group promoting discussions and safe practices of kinky and alternative sex. The school has no record of a similar group being recognized in its 376-year history.

The Committee on Student Life recognized Munch on Friday, making it one of 400 independent student organizations on campus. The decision occurred more than a year after members began meeting informally over meals.

"Applications for recognition are decided by a student-faculty committee following the review of a committee composed of students and administrators," Harvard spokesman Jeff Neal said in a statement Tuesday. "The college does not endorse the views or activities of any independent student organization."

Harvard is not the first school in the country to formally recognize kinky sex groups, and several active groups exist within the larger community in Cambridge and neighboring Boston.

Organizers of Harvard College Munch did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on Tuesday.

In a statement posted on a Harvard website, organizers say the group is for students interested in kink and alternative sexualities to meet and organize relevant events including speakers, discussions and screenings. Munch also has created a safety team to enable victims of abuse or trauma get help.

"It exists to promote a positive and accurate understanding of alternative sexualities and kink on campus, as well as to create a space where college-age adults may reach out to their peers and feel accepted in their own sexuality," the statement said.

"Though existing campus groups range from representing women and men, queer sexualities and orientations, all the way to groups dedicated to abstinence, no other group exists as a forum for students interested in alternative sexualities to explore their identities and develop a community with their peers," organizers said.

The group started with seven people and now has about 30 members. The statement didn't identify any of the members.

The Harvard Crimson school newspaper quotes one founder, identified only as Michael, as saying that recognition "comes with the fact of legitimacy" and shows members are being taken seriously. There are also practical benefits to formal recognition, including the ability to apply for grants, post notices and secure convenient time and locations for meetings, the founder said.

The Crimson reported that the group's efforts to gain official recognition last spring were foiled by trouble finding an adviser and problems with its constitution.

Starbucks back on expansion path in Americas, China

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Starbucks Corp plans to increase the number of its cafes in the Americas by more than 20 percent by opening more than 3,000 new shops there in the next five years as it looks to rely on tea and juice as much as coffee, it said on Wednesday.

The world's largest coffee chain is also finished with acquisitions for now, after buying juice seller Evolution Fresh for $30 million and Bay Bread LLC's La Boulange Bakery for $100 million over the last 13 months. Starbucks also plans to close its $620 million purchase of tea store chain Teavana Holdings Inc by year-end.

The company also announced expansion plans for the China/Asia Pacific region for the next three years.

"We're pretty full up at this time in terms of our resources and capabilities," Chief Executive Officer Howard Schultz said at Starbucks' investor conference in New York on Wednesday. "At this moment in time, we have enough to handle."

Food has long been a weak link at Starbucks, which plans to roll out sweet and savory La Boulange pastries and other goodies at 2,500 of its company-operated U.S. shops by the end of next year. Starbucks also expects to have Evolution Fresh juices in more than 5,000 U.S. stores by then.

Evolution Fresh should be slightly accretive in fiscal 2013 and La Boulange will follow in fiscal 2014, Starbucks' Chief Financial Officer Troy Alstead said.

The company also is experimenting with new retail concepts.

It has opened four Evolution Fresh juice stores and one Tazo tea shop in the United States, and it plans to add "tea bars" to existing Teavana stores.

The goal at Teavana is to replicate the success the company had adding coffee drinks at its early Starbucks stores, which sold whole bean coffee.

"There is always a risk when you take on all these brands," Bernstein Research analyst Sara Senatore said, but she added that Starbucks had mitigated that risk by making deals that fit with its long-term growth plans.

Schultz admitted that Starbucks' growth in 2007 and 2008 - the years before its business plunged with the financial crisis - was "undisciplined." The company is not returning to that prior strategy of "growth for growth's sake," he said.

PACKAGED GROWTH

Starbucks' consumer packaged goods business, which sells such items as whole bean coffee and bottled drinks through grocery stores and other retailers, could one day be as large as the cafe chain, Schultz said.

Investment Technology Group analyst Steve West said he was encouraged that the company is building a "tiered strategy" for those packaged goods, which will broaden their consumer appeal.

Investors are closely tracking Starbucks' new at-home Verismo coffee and espresso brewer, which the company is using to grab a piece of the fast-growing single-serve market dominated by Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc and Nestle SA .

Verismo sells for $199 or $399 depending on size and function. It will create a $30 million loss this year but should add to profits in 2015. Starbucks expects to get significant revenue from sales of the coffee and milk pods used with Verismo, which should bolster the packaged goods business.

Jeff Hansberry, Starbucks' president of channel development and emerging brands, said Verismo sales are "in line with our expectations."

CONSTRUCTION BOOM

When Starbucks' fiscal year ended on September 30, the company had 18,066 shops around the world, with just over 12,900 in the Americas. The United States dominates that region and will get more than half of the 3,000 planned new stores that the company announced on Wednesday.

Starbucks expects China to overtake Canada as its second-largest market in 2014. The fast-growing China/Asia Pacific region will have nearly 4,000 cafes by the end of 2013, including 1,000 in mainland China, where Starbucks said it was on track to have 1,500 cafes in 70 cities in 2015.

John Culver, president of Starbucks' China/Asia Pacific business, said sales at established stores in the region remain robust in October and November, following a 10 percent increase in the fiscal fourth quarter that ended September 30.

"We have seen the momentum we had in the fourth quarter carry over," Culver said.

CEO Schultz told Reuters that Starbucks is in talks about paying income taxes in the UK, even though the company has not made a profit in that market for many years. The move following criticism from lawmakers and the media over strategies that let it minimize payments. The company is expected to make a statement about a deal on Thursday.

Starbucks shares closed down 0.6 percent at $50.79 on Nasdaq.

Tornado kills 3, hits 150 homes in New Zealand

Three people were killed when an unusually destructive tornado swept through New Zealand. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Rescue crews were still looking for victims Thursday after a tornado touched down in the outskirts of Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, killing three people and tearing through some 150 homes, local media reported.

At least seven people were hospitalized,?the New Zealand Herald reported.

The tornado, driven by a powerful storm cell, tore concrete slabs from a building site and dropped them onto a truck, killing two people inside, a fire services spokesman said. A third person was killed by a falling tree.

Rescue teams were searching a school site for workers thought to be trapped beneath fallen concrete blocks in the west Auckland suburb of Hobsonville.

"I saw it coming across the river, the air went very electric and the sky went black. And then the wind started to whistle. This was like a juggernaut roaring through here," witness Suzanne McFadden told New Zealand's Newstalk ZB radio.

Hobsonville is the site of a new town center near Auckland, which is home to 1.3 million people, roughly a third of the New Zealand population.

Military personnel were going from door to door in the area to check if more people were trapped and authorities warned of more severe weather to come later on Thursday.

New Zealand has been hit by several natural disasters in recent years, including a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that struck the southern city of Christchurch in 2011, killing 185 people. Another tornado in Auckland last May killed one person.

The Christchurch quake caused damage worth NZ$15 billion to insurers, making it the country's costliest natural disaster.?

PST: Messi injures knee in Barcelona draw

There was Lionel Messi, sitting one goal away from tying Gerd Mueller?s all-time record of 85 in a calendar year. Emphasis on sitting. See, with Barcelona already qualified for the knockout round, coach Tito Vilanova chose to leave his star in the training area at the start of the match.

But the will of the people demanded Messi play, and Vilanova acquiesed, inserting his charge in at the 58th minute.

Disaster struck in the 85th minute after the forward crashed into Benfica goalkeeper Artur and went down clutching his left knee. He was taken off the field in a stretcher.

Luckily, early word is that he?s fine.

We hope that?s the case. A footballing world without Messi is no fun at all.

Happier times: Let?s watch Messi score five in a CL match earlier this year.

Video: Senate fails to ratify UN disabilities treaty

>> was not the only aspect of disagreement on display today in washington. as we said, there was that momentous vote in the senate that died a victim of politics. and failed despite a personal plea from a very senior states man. kelly o'donnell covered the hill for us. she's there tonight on capitol hill , kelly , good evening.

>> reporter: good evening, brirn. for those looking for cooperation tonight, only disappointment, even real sadness over what happened with this treaty intended to help the disabled. the appeal brought together three former presidential candidates , and the unusual site of a former senate majority leader back on the floor he once ran in the moments leading up to the vote. once a giant of the senate, visible in the corner of the c-span camera, today, though, frail and rarely seen in public, bob dole the war hero , presidential candidate , champion of disabled rights , tried to change the contentious spirit of this senate for disabled people around the world.

>> that's why an 89-year-old veteran, one week removed from bethesda naval hospital comes back to the senate on an early december day, because it matters.

>> reporter: matters to people like disabled veterans, dan lost both legs in afghanistan.

>> only by voting in favor of the disabilities treaty are we truly honor ing the disabled while answering the call.

>> reporter: the treaty, approved by 126 countries would promote equal rights and better treatment for the disabled, inspired by u.s. law . the americans with disabilities act .

>> mr. president, i come to the floor with a bit of a heavy heart today.

>> reporter: like dole, john kerry and john mccain are combat veterans who once aspired to the white house . today they fell short again. dole's own party failed him. five republican votes short of the 66 needed. conservative and tea party opponents say countries like china with a poor human rights record would get a pass.

>> what it does do is allow their leaders to falsely present themselves as forward leaning on disabled rights .

>> mr. chandliss, no.

>> reporter: for some no votes, politics, the risk of a gop primary challenge got in the way.

>> to vote for anything that is even perceived to be granting the u.n. power is a dangerous game for a republican senator. the u.n. is so unpopular among the republican base.

>> and that was the complaint we heard most often from conservatives. a worry about the u.n. getting more power. proponents of the treaty said that isn't the case. it's unusual to see tears shed in the senate chamber. i witnessed that today. after the vote, many disabled people did attend. i saw a woman in a wheelchair, leaving with tears rolling down her face about.

PFT: Suggs can play with injury; Lewis practices

BrownerReuters

With Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman fighting his four-game suspension for violation of the league?s policy against steroids and related substances, the team?s other starter at the position has opted to take his medicine for allegedly taking medicine that he shouldn?t have taken.? Allegedly.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that Brandon Browner decided that he couldn?t win the appeal, given the procedures to which the league and the NFLPA have agreed regarding drug testing.? Despite concerns regarding the collection process, the rules that apply to internal appeals make it difficult if not impossible to prevail.

So even if Browner didn?t knowingly or unknowingly ingest a substance contain amphetamines ? or even if he didn?t actually consume a substance containing amphetamines ? he produced a sample that generated a positive result for amphetamines.? Even if it was a false positive or a bad sample or any other irregularity, Browner will miss four games, eventually.

Of course, it would have been somewhat cheaper for Browner to fight.? With a base salary of $465,000, he?ll lose $27,352 per week for each of the final four games of the 2012 regular season.? Sherman, who earns the same base salary, will lose only $20,000 if he misses a wild-card game ? and only $22,000 if he misses the division round.

If any of Sherman?s suspension extends into 2013, when Browner and Sherman will each be earning $555,000 in base pay, the suspension will cost $32,647 per week.

The other reality is that, with Browner?s suspension starting now, he?ll be back for the first playoff game.? Sherman, barring an unlikely victory on appeal, will miss at least one playoff game.? But the good news is that the team won?t be without both players for any postseason game.

And it would be naive to think that the team had no role in suggesting this approach or encouraging it.? Without both starting corners, the Seahawks? chances of winning their first playoff game would have been significantly lower.
